THE HISTORY & FUTURE OF CONSERVATION IN SASKATCHEWAN WITH LORNE SCOTT!

In the absence of President Al Hoeft, we were welcomed to the Joint meeting of the Royary Clubs of Regina and Regina Eastview by Eastview Past President Ann Grahame. Allen Hillsden led in the singing of our National Anthem, and Acting President Ann shared our Land Acknowledgement statement.
Following a great Delta Hotel Buffet meal, the 16 on site attendees and the 8 persons who joined the meeting by ZOOM were introduced to a presentation which meshes well with Rotary's Seventh Area of Focus, Supporting the Environment. To set the stage for the presentation, Ann called on Jeannie Alexander to introduce our Guest Speaker. Here is some of what we learned about Lorne Scott, Indian Head farmer and a Saskatchewan Conservationist
Lorne Scott has been involved with farming and agriculture most of his life. He grew up on a farm and has operated his own farm for over 40 years. He served as Reeve of the RM of Indian Head for 13 years. Currently he serves on the Agriculture Producers Association of Saskatchewan's environment committee.
While Minister of Environment for the Province of Sask. in the 1990s, his achieve-ments included; a new Forest Resources Management Act, Conservation Easement legislation, creation of new protected areas, additions of Crown lands to the Wildlife Habitat Protection Act, creation of Chaplin Nature Centre and Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve,  Species at Risk legislation in the provincial Wildlife Act and an inventory of all protected areas in the province in the Representative Areas Network registry.
Lorne is a member of some 40 conservation organizations and has served on the boards of local, provincial, national and international organizations and is currently the board president for Nature Saskatchewan. His dedicated efforts helped establish; Sask. Heritage Marsh Program, Wildlife Habitat Protection Act, retention of Federal and Provincial Community Pastures, Burrowing Owl Interpretive Centre, Nature Sask., Stewards of Sask. programs, North American Waterfowl Management Plan and Grasslands National Park. Lorne has received many awards and citations over the past 50 years including; The Saskatchewan Order of Merit and is a member of the Order of Canada.
In his presentation, Lorne Scott shared how conservation and sensitivity to the environment were a part of his life from birth, to surviving spinal meningitis when he was 11, to attending a one room school and to his country living connection, which set the stage for an appreciation of birds and wild life. His first job, post high school was working as a naturalist in the Royal Saskatchewan Museum. Lorne spoke about "saving the Canada Goose", as a conservation hero story, and attention to concern about Whooping Crane as an ongoing watchful restoration undertaking. Changes in bird species and the numbers seen in certain areas of the province are worthy of note and of concern
The protection of Crown Land and Community Pastures receives ongoing attention as efforts to privatize these areas remains a treat as it would contribute to the loss of the provinces natural landscape. Lorne reminded us that as early as 1957 work on Grasslands National Park was initiated and was finally realized in the year 2000, which demonstrates the importance consistent monitoring of action.
Wetland protection and creation is receiving ongoing attention and drew attention to the increasing concern in the Cumberland House area where Dams on the North and South Saskatchewan Rivers are impacting the flow of water reaching this area in Northeastern Saskatchewan.
As a seeming friend of all birds, Lorne Scott is an appreciated Saskatchewanian and would be a welcomed addition to Rotary Internationals Protection of the Environment Community. Rotarians and guests at today's meeting were inspired by what can be achieved when an identified burden is shared.
Thank you, Lorne Scott.

Amarok Society

Next week Dr. Tanyss Munro will be our Guest Speaker telling us about the work of the Amarok Society and more specifically about our Club’s support of their life changing work.
For the past 5 years Regina Eastview has contributed to the work of Amarok Society as one of the Club’s International projects. Dr. Tanyss Munro who, along with her husband Dr. Gem Munro, are the founders of the Amarok Society which is committed to the education of children living in the most challenging situations - children being raised in the largest and most needy slums in countries like Bangladesh. Through a process of educating Mothers in these slums, these Mothers in turn become the teachers of their children and the children in their little corner of the slum.
As an introduction to the work of the Amarok Society please check out the story below.
Sathi Akter
Eastview's Adopted Mother-Teacher Instructing a Class

“Why mothers?”

“We're after the poorest urban children.
The world they're growing up in is a dangerous one; chaotic, unpredictable, and precarious.
Reaching these boys and girls will never be as simple as sitting them down in front of a desk: sustainability starts with stabilizing the slum they wake up in every morning.
So, it's not just that a mother can always reach her child, even when conventional schools can't. It's that a mother can transform the world her child is growing up in.
If you teach a mother, she invests that learning back into her community. She'll use her empowerment to stand up for women's rights, children's rights, peace, and equality. She'll use her success to improve life for everyone in the slum
.”
