NEVIN MARKWART -- LIFE LESSONS LEARNED IN A HOCKEY CAREER!

Nevin Markwart is a Canadian former professional ice hockey winger who played 309 games in the National Hockey League.  He grew up in Regina. He played junior hockey with the Regina Blues and Regina Pats.  He attended Sherwood Elementary School and graduated from Luther College in 1982,
Nevin earned a Master of Business Administration from North Western University and a Master of Science in cybersecurity from Brown University. Nevin is an online information privacy expert, Nevin was the Boston Bruins’ first pick in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft.  He went on to play nine seasons in the NHL, mainly with the Boston Bruins and a short time with the Calgary Flames.  He spent some time in the investment management industry.  Nevin ran unsuccessfully for the Saskatchewan Party in Walsh Acres.
Nevin spoke about the lessons learned in his sports career that he has carried with him into his business and personal life.  They include: Teamwork--the willingness to unconditionally help team mates.  These lessons begin in youth hockey.  He continues to look for this quality in business--do people care?  Leadership which is closely aligned to Teamwork--culture i.e. respect, accountability, behavior norms.
Dedication--willingness to take your own path is a key attribute.  Work ethic--does one strive to be a little bit better every day, sometimes in the face of life challenges.
Competitiveness--one of the best ways to win is to learn how to lose--to experience failure.  Sports people are resilient.  They learn from mistakes but keep moving forward.  All of these attributes can be applied to marriage, service clubs and raising children and life in general.
Thank you Nevin for visiting our club and presenting this inspirational life message.

A Rotary Foundation moment.
Two years after Russian forces invaded Ukraine, Rotary members around the globe continue to raise funds and send medicine, fuel, and other essential supplies to those affected by the conflict.
A special relief fund created by The Rotary Foundation, now closed to contributions, raised more than US$17.4 million from donors around the world and has funded 375 grants that have allowed Rotary members to provide different kinds of help.
A past governor of District 2232 (Ukraine) says the huge response since the Russian invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022 has strengthened Rotary in Ukraine.
Clubs in Ukraine have added more than 500 new members in the past two years.
The increased service efforts have also drawn media attention.
Before the war, the media did not want to mention Rotary in the news.  At the moment, they like to tell about Rotary because of the help Rotary is giving and because their activities are very impactful.
About Rotaract:
Using popular culture to promote Rotary, the Rotaract Club of Dhaka Orchid, Bangladesh, organized a concert in Dhaka City featuring nine of the country’s top rock and metal bands. More than 12,000 young adults attended. The club received hundreds of inquiries about joining in the weeks following the event, which was widely promoted on social networks and in the media. In Bangladesh and worldwide, Rotaract clubs are uniting young adults with a common interest in service – thus helping Rotary innovate, adapt, and evolve. World Rotaract Week, 11-17 March, commemorates the founding of the first Rotaract club in 1968 and celebrates Rotaract’s success around the world.
