IGG PRAYRII - EDUCATE • inspire • EMPOWER!

President Jean-Marc chose to be this week's Guest Speaker introducer. He admitted to a level of bias as he proceeded to introduce his oldest daughter Alexandrea, a fourth-year Science student studying Biology at l’Université de St. Boniface in Winnipeg. He noted Alexandrea spent been a staunch volunteer for a large portion of her 22 years. A significant part of the volunteerism focused on advocating for women’s, and particularly girls’, rights. In her time in Ottawa and now more recently in Winnipeg, Alexandrea has been amazed by the impact this organization, Indigo Girls Group (IGG) could make on youth and their leadership abilities, passion for various subjects, as well as their compassion toward others. This group (IGG) gives her a platform to lead positive change as well as give back to the community and, hopefully, inspire the girls with whom they work to want to do the same. In her presentation Alexandrea indicated she would tell us about IGG Prayrii (Prairie); who they are, how they started, what they do to serve the community, and how others can get involved.
The introductory sentence in the MISSION statement of Indigo Girl Group provides an important introduction to "who they are"; an Indigo Girl "is a self-identifying young woman who is aware of her existence as a powerful person in the world." Members tend to be University students who are "self-identifying or non-binary members of any background between the ages of 18-30".
Alexandrea explained the "Indigo" part of the organization’s name comes from folklore IGG founder, Adele Heagle's mother shared: “Indigo Children were supposedly put on Earth as wise beings that would create positive change around them”. Adele initiated the first group in Guelph in response to a seeming absence of extra-curricular activities for girls. The initiative spread through other Ontario cities, on to Halifax and Vancouver, and Alexandrea brought the program to Winnipeg. While operating in a similar manner, their workshops and activities tend to be locally defined.
The Indigo Girls Group Winnipeg began in February 2020, just before the pandemic which has challenged rapid development. They worked diligently to move forward and recently changed our name to IGG Prayrii to better describe who they are and to move away from the reference to "girls", as they wished to stop using Gender Based terminology, and use "Prayrii" as representative of both Manitoba and Saskatchewan. In IGG Prayrii, Alexandrea explained they have an array of programs but she was excited about two Mentorship programs they are starting. A Youth Mentorship is for high schools students with the opportunity to move to more responsible roles over time. There is also a Junior Mentorship program for student’s ages 10-13 who will be assisted in undertaking a project in the community that will create positive change.
Alexandrea Nadeau
Alexandrea shared a number of ways in how interested people can become involved. For details on these aspects please click on the link above and be inspired by this young lady's enthusiasm.
Alexandrea Nadeau, International heroin, Michelle Obama, must have had you in mind when she said, “There is no limit to what we, as women, can accomplish.”
Thank you for your message.
