LISA BRODA, SASKATCHEWAN ADVOCATE FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH!

Doreen Pankewich provided the following introduction on guest speaker,
Lisa Broda, PhD, currently appointed as the Advocate for Children and Youth for the province of Saskatchewan.  Ms. Broda holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Saskatchewan and brings over 25 years of experience in senior leadership, community engagement and research to the position.  Prior to her work at the Office of the Advocate for Children and Youth, Ms. Broda held various senior leadership roles within the provincial government and has had many professional highlights throughout her career, including a recipient of the Premier’s Award for Excellence in 2010.

Ms. Broda has extensively researched and worked in the field of children exposed to violence and suicide, intimate and domestic violence, and has worked with children, women, men, families, and communities who have been affected by violence. More recently, she has worked to advance children’s rights and to advocate for better service outcomes for Saskatchewan’s young people, leading at the executive level in all ministries that serve children and youth.

The Advocate is appointed for a 5 year term by the Legislative Assembly and is independent of the Legislature.  The Office has its own legislation as do all offices across Canada.  They hold Governments and their Ministries accountable for their policies or lack thereof within the authority of the Office.

Ms. Broda gave us a snapshot of the work of the Advocate. She noted the Office of the Advocate works collaboratively with ministries, stakeholders, communities, families, First Nations and Metis Governments and agencies.  She and her Office embrace Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Actions and the principles of reconciliation in her work and the work of the Advocate’s office.
Ms. Broda is also currently serving as the President of the Canadian Council of Child and Youth Advocates, a national body comprised of provincially and territorial appointed child advocates and representatives for children, and prior to this led the research in the Council’s most recently released report entitled, National Paper on Youth Suicide.

Ms. Broda has been a senior lecturer for the Department of Sociology at the University of Saskatchewan for over the past two decades and is dedicated to community involvement having served in several community leadership roles, most currently as the Chair of the Prairieaction Foundation.
Lisa Broda, Advocate for Child and Youth Services in Saskatchewan
In her conversation with our club, Ms Broda noted that when the Advocate's office calls, people listen. The Office is involved in investigations and research. An example of the latter is their data gathering process on mental health and addictions in children and youth.  This has involved 500 stakeholders. The Office is also involved in public education.  Their recommendations are for the benefit of all.  The Advocate offices across the country are currently watching the proposed legislation governing the Rights of Indigenous People which is in 2nd reading with the Federal Government.
Ms. Broda noted her admiration for Rotary International and the clubs that are supportive of youth programs.  She concluded her presentation saying that all legislation needs to be inclusive and provide equity for all children and youth.  She constantly asks herself and others "How can we improve the system?"
How fortunate we are to have the Advocate's Office holding our Government, its Ministries and indirectly all of us, accountable for children and youth. Hopefully this will make a better world for all. Thank you for joining us today.  More information is available at saskadvocate.ca.
The Family of Rotary
Shreedhar advised that his former Rotary Club in Fort Qu'Appelle will be closing by the end of June.  Shreedhar noted that his membership in the Fort Qu'Appelle Club, prior to moving to Regina, has special memories for him.
See the photo below of the R.C. of Fort QuApelle taken in 2019 by Ann Grahame.  They assisted Ann in setting up the Shelter Box at a club meeting.  Thanks Ann.
FELLOWSHIP HIGHLIGHTS
  • Greg was the acting Sergeant today.  He had given his role some thought and noted that he cannot fine people (Greg sees only the good things people do) and so gave a number of topics on which we might submit happy bucks.  However, Shreedhar understandably, had to point out an error our President made in declaring there were no birthdays to announce.  Shreedhar's birthday was on Tuesday, June 8.  In turn, Jean-Marc transferred the fine to Allen Hillsden as he had provided the birthday list minus Shreedhar's name.  If you can follow this, you deserve a prize--but, sorry, there is no prize!  Peter Peters had on his proud Grandpa shirt today as granddaughter, Elle, was chosen valedictorian for her Luther College Grade 12 graduation.  Congratulations Elle, Mom and Dad and Grandparents.  Seems like only yesterday that Peter, again with his proud Grandpa shirt on, announced her arrival into the world!!  It is true -- time flies.
  • Clarence is very happy--they have had both vaccinations and their family are coming home on July 1 for a visit.
  • Jean-Marc was happy his Montreal Canadiens won against the Winnipeg Jets.  Allen Hillsden was not online to protest at that moment being a fan of whatever happens in  Winnipeg.
  • Greg's youngest son, Liam, unfortunately lost his job as an electrician due to COVID but not to be discouraged, took training in instrumentation and is now (via the CoOp program) working 4 months in the Northern Sask. uranium mine.  Good for you, Liam.  You cannot keep a good man down.
  • Doreen Pankewich was happy she has had both vaccinations but more importantly, her hostas have come up and are doing well.  These days we take our happiness where we can get it!  You do have a green thumb, Doreen.
  • HAVE A GOOD WEEK EVERYONE AND MAY YOUR PLANTS ALSO DO WELL.
