President Al Hoeft was in control and called the group of 20 to order at 12:08 and extended a warm welcome to Guests, Visitors and Members this first May 2024 meeting. Having extended the meetings Land Acknowledgement statement, he also acknowledged that Tania Woroby would be celebrating a Birthday on May 7th to be followed by Shannon Windrim's Birthday two days later. There are no Club Anniversaries in May or June. Next President Al called on Jeanne Alexander to introduce our Guest Speaker, Rod McKendrick.
We learned Rod McKendrick worked in policing for 31 years. Six of those years were with the British Police, prior to immigrating to Canada in 1979, to work with the Regina Police Service. Rod was seconded to the Ministry of Justice in 1998, to provide province wide training on interpersonal violence and abuse and to provide expertise on other justice initiatives related to interpersonal violence and abuse till 2004, when he retired from policing. Rod then joined the Ministry of Justice where he was responsible for the development of the Polytech/Victims Services Coordination Course, which provides hands on skills for personnel to collaborate with victims. He completed the development of a “Guide for Children Exposed to Violence Programs in Saskatchewan” and a manual for front line professionals working with children and youth who are exposed to violence. Rod is also currently serving a 3 year term on the International Board of Directors of Optimist International. In December 2022, Rod McKendrick was appointed to the Order of Canada.
Rod has just recently been contracted to be the Provincial Coordinator on Social Prescribing (SP) to address the non-medical needs of older adults 55+. This is a new initiative for Saskatchewan and will run for four years. In his presentation Rod introduced SP as a means for physicians and health care workers to connect patients with a range of services in the community to improve health and well-being. The process promotes community-based integrated care and helps reduce some of the dependence on health care provisions. It is in part about searching out what is causing the medical situation and referring patients to a variety of activities and services (like a walk in the park). The creation of "Community Connectors" puts in place a pathway to address each individual's needs and can be adapted to each unique individual. From "patient", to "Clinic", to "Community Connector", to "Community and Volunteer Sector".
The SP process was initially started in the UK in the 1990's in some small practice areas but by 2016 it had grown and prompted as development of the International Social Prescribing Network, and has been incorporated into the national model of personalized care. SP has been developed and/or incorporated into the health care system in at least 17 countries. In Canada the Canadian Institute for Social Prescribing is a new national hub to link people and share best practices connecting people to community supports and services across the country.
In Saskatchewan the aim is to ensure that older adults can live and thrive in their homes and communities surrounded by supports and services they need. In this regard SP is working with the Saskatchewan Health Quality Council who has the responsibility for all developmental data collection and evaluation. This Initiative of social prescribing will take place in 14 communities - 12 in smaller rural communities and 2 in areas within larger urban centres. The aim is to demonstrate that social prescribing is an effective way to address the needs of older adults particularly those who are high users of health services.
Rod McKendrick, thank you for your presentation. The focus of this social prescribing is most interesting and we look forward to watching it unfold in the coming months and years. Best wishes in your leadership role.
Rod McKenderk CM
