Regina Eastview will Celebrate World Polio Day on October 29, 2020 when PDG Pat Chernesky, District Polio Plus Chair, is our Guest Speaker.
President Jean-Marc introduced our Guest Speaker Danielle Humble-Selinger, the General Manager of Regina Food for Learning (RFFL). Danielle has worked with the RFFL for the past two years, managing their food program. The RFFL partners with the community and community organizations to provide nourishing food to children in schools. In the past, Danielle volunteered with food security groups involved in advocating for healthy eating in schools and for school food garden projects.
RFFL is a non-profit organization and is the largest child feeding program in the city, providing services to Regina schools and neighbourhoods since 1988. Danielle indicated food insecurity is a significant challenge in Regina, noting many children come to school hungry. She referred to Canadian poverty statistics which place Saskatchewan as having the highest poverty rate with some 100,400 children living below the poverty line. Danielle explained the impact of coming to school hungry manifests itself in various ways including - lower performance in math, reading and social function; behavioural & emotional challenges; late attendance or absenteeism; and, reduced school engagement. In response to this challenge, RFFL provides three different meals - a snack; a breakfast; and, a lunch distributed in accordance with expressed need.
The program's nutrition program has supported thousands of school children across Regina in over 40 schools and community centres since its inception. The program helps build community and support children to be engaged in their school community. Danielle noted in 2020-2021 school year RFFL is involved in 13 schools, where it touches 935 students and serves in the order of 15,140 meals per month.
The program operates out of the Core Ritchie and Glen Elm Community School with 4 staff and a strong core of 20 volunteers, in addition to school staff and students. Approximately 47% of the program's $200,000.00 annual budget is for groceries, with 45% going for salaries. Their income is derived from Grants (55%), donations (26%), and from paid meals (17%).
At the conclusion of her presentation, Danielle provided opportunity for questions and from the response this added significant detail to her earlier comments. Of particular note was the discussion around the increasing focus on working with likeminded and focused organizations and groups in coordinating their efforts and minimizing overlap and duplication.
President Jean-Marc thanked Danielle for her presentation and specifically the important work provided by the RFFL program to the school children and their families in addressing the challenges of poverty in our community.

FELLOWSHIP HIGHLIGHTS
Hybrid Meeting # 2 gathered 8 members at the Rotisserie Restaurant and 17 people joined via ZOOM;
As at 6:10 P.M. today $1,028.80 has been donated by members toward the $20.20 per member Polio Plus challenge;
Members who have not sold hams to date were again fined $1.00 - "when will they ever learn";
Congratiulations to all those who are helping make this a major fund raiser;
