MEMBER DISCUSSION ON FUND RAISING IDEAS AND MORE LED BY PRESIDENT AL

President Al began the meeting with a warm welcome to all followed by the Land Acknowledgement. Members were invited to speak to their ideas for fund raising for the club and as well to consider ways to promote Rotary's visibility.  Members provided much food for thought.  The ideas are presented below:
Richard Taylor reminded us of the many years that the Taylor Travel company, R.T, Travel, has provided funds to Eastview from their commission on personal travel of Rotarians and friends.  Started in 2009 to 2020 the Taylors have raised over $20,000.  This option is still available and hopefully will be considered as travel is again possible..
Another suggestion was that while the restaurant has closed which made a virtual Valentine Gala possible the last few years, another restaurant such as Roots might be an option.  A spring fling was suggested possibly using rooms available at Local & Fresh --serving food buffet style with a silent auction for e.g. of desserts.  A speaker might spark community interest.
It was noted that decreasing membership increases the challenge for holding large events requiring detailed preparation.  It is important to have a focus e.g. mental health to attract a sponsor who would support a project on a yearly basis.  The Rotary Riders have been successful in their project over the years focused on raising funds for the children of Guatemala organized by the same people every year.
It has been pointed out by the R.I. President-Elect, that we need to make our clubs irresistible.  Cleaning up an area in North Central Regina would provide visibility.  Perhaps N. Central Family Center would partner with club and residents who hopefully would become interested in improving their neighborhood.  Wearing Rotary shirts, or caps would focus some attention on Rotary. Such visibility might attract new people into Rotary membership.
This suggestion came forward; Have a luncheon and a well known guest speaker--the new Rider coach perhaps along with one or two professionals working in the area of mental health--a panel--to talk about a subject to do with mental health such as bullying.  There could be community interest, we could sell tickets.
We need to 'do something to be seen doing something'.  Events can be shared on social media & newspapers.  Our club has a following on Facebook.

This message was sent to all members--Bob Durston, District 5550 Director of the Rotary Foundation brought this message to the meeting.
Carolyn Ferguson, Senior Major Gifts Officer Zone 28 The Rotary Foundation has contacted me to accept the Challenge of encouraging Rotarians in D 5550 to contribute to Polio Plus during the month of February. An anonymous Rotarian has contributed $200,000.00 US to Polio Plus and has offered the points to D5550 Rotarians to match contributions to Polio Plus.

How it works
Contribute a minimum of $100.00 US to Polio Plus Fund in your normal way either by Rotary Direct or by mail in contributions individually or through your club.  You will receive your tax receipt from  The Rotary Foundation as usual.
Example Feb exchange rate is $1.34 CAD to US dollar  so $100.00 US X $1.34 = $134.00 CAD is  the minimum contribution. Reason for this is the minimum matching points is 100 US     If you contribute $500.00 US or $670.00 CAD then the matching points credited to you would give a Paul Harris Fellowship award.

Then email me at, rdurston@mymts.net with your name Rotary ID, Club name and club number. If you do not have the numbers I can look up when I complete the Points transfer form from our anonymous Rotarian to your personal Rotary account.

Clubs cannot receive matching points for Polio Plus contributions, only individual Rotarians.

This becomes the largest matching point challenge in all my years as Rotarian in our District!!!

All member contributions must be made to The Rotary Foundation (Canada) between Feb 1 and Feb 28, 2024 to receive the matching points.
EASTVIEW MEMBERS PLEASE NOTE A SEPARATE EMAIL WILL FOLLOW WITH
SUGGESTED INSTRUCTIONS ON DONATING TO THIS POLIO PLUS OPPORTUNITY.  G. Bradley

More Foundation news: In this month’s Rotary magazine, we learn that a new Peace Center has been opened in partnership with a University in Istanbul, the first in the Middle East.  In the very beginning, at the invitation of Saudi Arabia, a former Rotary Peace Scholar from Egypt was asked to provide his expertise in the development. The Rotary Chair of the Search Committee for the site, Bill Boyd, says “we will not solve every problem, but we will make a difference, through the many peace fellows who will become catalysts for peace across the region.”  Read more on this exciting positive development in the February 2024 Rotary magazine.

FELLOWSHIP HIGHLIGHTS
  • It was good to hear the ideas of members today on future fund raising efforts.  We have fond memories of the Valentine Gala.  It was a lot of work but provided great fellowship throughout the process. We look forward to the Board's deliberations (all are welcome to attend the Board meeting next Thursday, Feb. 8 at 5-515 on zoom).  If you do decide to attend contact a Board member for the link
