SASKATCHEWAN VISUAL ART PROJECT!

     President Pat Dell called on Ann Grahame, former Chair of Youth Service Projects to introduce our Guest Speaker, Krishan Kapila, Co-Chair of the Saskatchewan Visual Art Project, a role he shares with David Katzman of Saskatoon. We learned from Ann, that Krishan, and Educator, was born in Burma moved to India where he received his initial teacher education which was supplemented in England and also in North America. His decades of teaching included bringing these skills to south-eastern Saskatchewan, having taught in Wolseley and Balgonie.
    In his opening comments our guest, Krishan, commended our common friend Shreedhar Jachak, for the encouragement and support he has received from Shreedhar for identifying organizations where his specific talents would be of benefit. Krishan, indicated a vision for the Saskatchewan Visual Arts Projects, was identified some 10 years ago. The notion of using the classroom as a place where students could take a multi-dimensional look at a world where peace, unity and care for “mother earth” are central and could be presented in an artistic manner was identified. The Saskatchewan Multi-Faith Community encouraged the creation of the project, Art programs in Saskatchewan schools came on side and the project expanded for a number of years until COVID in 2019-2020, when the program was placed on hold. The Project worked hard restructuring from a very “hands–on” approach to a digital delivery approach for the 2020-2021 program. The transition was successful with all entries forwarded and received digitally at a central location.
    The focus of the program is a “celebration of art, faith and spirituality” which encourages students in Grades 9 to 12 to create a more inclusive, respectful world through their art work. The intention is that the end product will educate and inspire people of all ages to treat, “each other and our fragile environment with genuine respect and thoughtful action”. Krishan explained our collective commitment to “mother earth” is really a “no-brainer”, the world we have now is the only world we will have for some centuries. Running off to the moon or mars any time soon (except for a few people) is unlikely. As a result our environment is critical to our survival.
    The program received 33 entries from students this year, and the team of skilled judges selected 15 winning entries These 15 entries were framed and are currently on display at the Regina Public Library, Dunlop Art Gallery, where they will remain until the latter part of August. The Art Work is then displayed in Fort Qu’Appelle for a month before being sent on to Saskatoon. The entries will be returned to the artist at the end of the year.
    Using power point slides, Krishan provided an overview of each of the winning entries. Please GOOGLE Saskatchewan Visual Arts Project 2020-2021 winning entries and you get a sense about the commitment of these young artists – better yet, go to the Art Gallery.
    Thank you Krishan for your great presentation and for your passion for your commitment to this inspiring initiative.
    Regina Eastview member are reminded that our Club has been proud participants with this project since 2012-2015. Congratulations!

When there is a question about the effectiveness of vaccination, Polio Plus is a modern day example of the difference it can make.
Polio Eradication Progress
From 350,000 cases of polio diagnosed in 1988, in 125 polio endemic countries to 2 Wild Poliovirus in 2 endemic countries. There should be no doubt.

FELLOWSHIP HIGHLIGHTS
  • Vice President Richard Schwan, joined the meeting from their exotic "summer home", on the shores of Mission Lake, to assume the role of Sergeant-At-Arms. Knowing this role has significant "meeting decorum" responsibilities, which need to be balanced by the President's high fund raising expectations, newly installed Sergeant Richard is faced with a moral dilemma and dealt with it as gifted financial manager - "who is or has 'goofed off' on a vacation experience"?;
  • Jean-Marc was at home in his "fighter plane" dream land and was happy to pay;
  • Shreedhar Jachak told us that he and his wife and their son and his family when to Watrous and enjoyed the Spa - he was happy to pay;
  • Ann Graham was charged with interfering with Shreedhar's comments by trumping his story with her daughter's great time at the Spa;
  • Understanding, that she would have to pay more if she wanted to share her Happy Dollars, Ann proceeded to tell us of her grandchildren's exciting canoe racing escapades on Wascana Lake;
  • Peter Peters had some Happy Dollars by telling members of his participation in this year's MS Bike Tour Fund Raiser - he noted Sam Berg is participating in the Fund Raiser this year as part of the Peters Pedalers Plus Team - he thanked members who have contributed to his appeal and welcomed others to contribute to either Sam or himself by Googling MS Bike Tour and following the leads;
  • Allen Hillsden shared a story about his son's supper making preparation where the meat was taken out, and no one thought about the attraction dogs have for unguarded meat - it was necessary to rethink supper;
  • Have a great safe long weekend everyone - hope to see you next week.
