SUPPORTING DIABETES ESPECIALLY IN CHILDREN WITH LINDSAY WIG
President Elect Jayna was our meeting leader today. Following a warm welcome and the Land Acknowledgement, Jayna introduced Lindsay Wig, Director of Signature events with Diabetes Canada. Lindsay spoke passionately about the programs Diabetes Canada offers especially for children. Statistics show that another Canadian is diagnosed every 3 minutes. 1.5 million have Type 2 diabetes and are unaware they have it. "Part of Diabetes Canada's strategic plan is to enhance the quality of life for people diagnosed with diabetes and therefore we are supporting the development of a variety of Nutrition resources to support diabetes self management education."
The four pillars under which Diabetes Canada works are Research, Programs, Advocacy and Education. One of their programs, D-Camps falls under these pillars. There are a number of D-Camps across Canada. These are medically supervised camps for kids living with type 1 diabetes that foster inclusion and offer a sense of belonging for campers. The goal is to foster an atmosphere of inclusivity where campers gain a new level of independence in managing their type 1 diabetes.
Through their fundraising events, Diabetes Canada provides subsidies to ensure that all children living with type 1 diabetes can attend camp regardless of financial circumstances. The camps offer children resilience, courage and friendships.
Through their public education programs, the goal is to reduce stigma by providing information on the prevalence and impact of diabetes. Diabetes Canada is working to develop strategies and programs aimed at changing the conversation about diabetes and improving the quality of life for those living with diabetes.
How can we support the work of Diabetes Canada? Help at events; Sponsor or donate to the 2025 Camp Kornder at Christopher Lake, Saskatchewan; Become a model at the Pump Couture fashion show and share your story to help others living with diabetes; Volunteer at the event; Share and help fill the seats and cheer on the models. The next event is on May 10, 5-30 to 9-30PM at the Wascana Country Club.

Regina Eastview Supports Regina Public Library
In late January Community Service Chair Sam Berg and President Elect Jayna Amadasun attended Regina Public Library and presented a cheque to Library staff supporting the Library’s Culture Connect Program. This program fosters cross-cultural engagement providing a platform for Indigenous and non-Indigenous people to connect, learn, and share experiences.
According to Taylor Soderberg, who is in charge of the program, and Amber Christensen, Executive Director, Central Library, Regina Eastview’s $1,800.00 donation supports the Library in offering culturally safe, Indigenous-led programming that increases cultural knowledge. The program has had a significant impact on the Regina community, bringing together people of all ages and backgrounds to learn about and appreciate Indigenous cultures. Congratulations, Community Service for enriching the Regina Community for the benefit of all our residents. You make us proud!

In the Feb. 2025 issue of the Rotarian, see the message by Foundation Trustee Chair, M.D. Maloney. He notes that "this month the Foundation Trustees will consider a plan to establish our eighth Rotary Peace Center in Asia, as part of our vision to have peace centers on every inhabited continent by 2030."
