Rotary Exchange Student, Thuraya Brennan, shares An Exchange Student Year in Sweden

Regina Eastview's 2018-2019 Out-Bound Rotary Exchange Student, Thuraya Brennan, captured the attention and imagination of Rotarians and guests as she highlighted her outstanding year in Sweden. Using power point slides, our guest speaker took us on a inspiring youthful Exchange Student tour of Sweden. We traveled in the company of her new found friends from around the world, her host family and the friends she gained in her school and community. We learned about the initial language training and the difficulty she had in finding students, who rather than speaking "Swedish", tend to speak English. We were introduced to "Swanksgiving" which is a multi-country "Thanksgiving", and one understands feeds right into the world of a gathering of Rotary Exchange Students.

Guest Speaker Thuraya Brennan shares her Adventure
Thuraya participated in the European Youth Parliament even though her Canadian citizenship was a bit of a stretch. One might well guess that this young lady's smile could easily open the most resistant European door. Christmas was a wonderful eye opening experience, and a taste bud challenge. It seems our guest will not soon exchange her customary turkey dinner for a raw fish treat. A winter excursion to Kiruna, in the northern part of Sweden, is a part of the country where there is no daylight - 24 hours of night - was a delight and provided an opportunity for some exchange students to witness the northern lights. Feeding reindeer was an added treat for all Exchange Students including the one from Regina.
    Our Club can be exceedingly proud to have selected Thuraya Brennan to represent this City, District 5550, and Canada to Rotarians and all of Sweden. Doug Mortin expressed the appreciation of our members to Thuraya for her presentation and mostly for being a quality Canadian Ambassador. Additionally, Doug thanked Carrie Ross for serving as host parent for our Club's In-Bound Student.

Sofia Mandala Addresses Rotary
Our In-Bound Excchange Student, Sofia Mandala from Italy, strode confidently to the podium and made her first presentation to members of Regina Eastview. Using power point slides Sofia introduced us to her homeland. She touched on the beauty of sea for which  her City, Cariari, is famous. Sofia, welcome to Canada, Saskatchewanand Regina.
Fellowship Highlights
Ashok Verma sharing stories of Spain adventure with Peter Neufeldt, Doug Mortin and Leo Ell
Here are today's highlights of fellowship
  • Ashok and Kamla Verma just returned from a holiday in Spain - note conversation above:
  • 10 Rotarians jumped up and each paid the $2.00 fine imposed by the Sergeant on our Guest Speaker Thuraya for a seemingly significant infraction;
  • We rejoiced with Pat Richards on learning that no one was injuried yesterday in a Texas School shooting attended by her granddaughter;
  • Doug Archer rose to introduce us to his guest, Natasha Birnie, who is with Knight Archer, and is interested in Rotary;
  • Thuraya, drew Gail Bradley's ticket allowing Gail access to the box of marbles. Sadly, Gail, who fished around in the box for some time, came up "blue". Means were down to 9 blue marbles in the box;
  • The fellowship is always good, thank you for being part making this a fine day.
  • HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!
