THE TERRY FOX RIDE OF HOPE WITH CO-ORDINATOR, NIKKI REKMAN

      President Al began the meeting with a welcome to all. He introduced Nikki Rekman, the coordinator of the Terry Fox, Ride of Hope. This year is the 44th anniversary of Terry's original Marathon of Hope.
     Eighteen-year-old Terry Fox of Port Coquitlam, BC never saw himself as remarkable. Following his cancer diagnosis of osteogenic sarcoma just above the knee, the subsequent amputation of his leg and experience in the cancer wards charged Terry with compassion and and a fierce determination to bring an end to the suffering cancer causes, and set him on a path that changed the world.
     Who can forget the compelling scene of Terry bravely running across Canada with a small entourage following him. His run ended near Thunder Bay due to a recurrence of his cancer. Touched by the tragedy, Canadians promised Terry they would 'Finish It' and see his dream of a cure for cancer realized. 44 years later the country remains committed to seeing Terry's dream come to fruition.
      The Ride of Hope started because Terry’s younger brother, Darrell, wanted to do something special to mark the 35th anniversary of Terry’s Marathon of Hope. In 2015, Darrell and a small crew of riders cycled 350 km to the base of Mount Terry Fox, in British Columbia.
     This year, Darrell is organizing a very special National Ride of Hope in honour of the 45th anniversary of Terry’s Marathon of Hope. This time, it’s literally a Ride as big as our country. On June 9, a team of 10-12 cyclists will leave Vancouver and pedal 7,000 km to arrive in St. John’s on July 10. In addition to being an epic 32-day tribute to Terry’s legacy, it’s a powerful, poignant way to support his dream of a world without cancer. As the National Ride makes its way across 10 provinces and through 13 cities, there will be opportunities for experienced cyclists to fundraise and join the event! In 11 years, the Ride of Hope has raised almost $1 million. Over the 45 years since the first Marathon of Hope over $900 million has been raised.
     It was Eastview's own, Ron Okumura, who responded to Nikki's email requesting support for the Ride. Ron and President Al will be co hosts of a barbeque welcoming the 11th Ride of Hope to Regina on June 16.  Eastview will host the Riders and supporters in Wascana Park on June 16. Plans are underway to make this Regina Eastview welcome of the Ride of Hope a very special event honouring Terry's first marathon and his dream of a cancer free world. More details will follow on this event in the weeks ahead.
THANK YOU NIKKI, RON AND ROTARIANS FOR MAKING EASTVIEW A PART OF THIS JOURNEY IN HONOUR OF A SPECIAL YOUNG MAN WITH A DREAM. This truly exemplifies the Magic of Rotary.

WHO's emblem was chosen by the First World Health Assembly in 1948. The emblem consists of the United Nations symbol surmounted by a staff with a snake coiling round it. The association between snakes and medicine is mainly due to the snake's ability to shed its skin which led to snakes as a symbol of life, rebirth and renewal, and fertility in mythologies and legends.
A long time partner of Rotary International, among others, in the fight against polio is the World Heath Organization (WHO). While millions of lives have been saved, the fight continues as well as the research being done on other diseases.
Below are excerpts from WHO on their immunization strategy IA 2030, their mission, their targets, their path forward. At a time when immunization is questioned by some and rates in some countries continue to drop, it is reassuring to read this report and learn of the work being done by WHO.
IA2030 is an ambitious global strategy to maximize the lifesaving impact of vaccines that, if fully implemented, will save 50 million lives over the next decade.

Targets to be achieved by 2030 include:

  • Achieving 90% coverage for essential vaccines given in childhood and adolescence;
  • Halving the number of children completely missing out on vaccines;
  • Completing 500 national or subnational introductions of new or under-utilized vaccines  - such as those for COVID-19, rotavirus, or human papillomavirus (HPV);
