ROTARACT RETURNS TO REGINA!

President Jean-Marc called on Richard Schwan, a member of the Club's Youth Service Committee, to introduce our Guest Speaker, Karla Friesen. This is what we learned.
    Karla has been involved with Rotary since 2013. Her involvement entails attending RYLA, Rotary Youth Exchange (which included an activity packed year in Bonn, Germany), hosting international students and volunteering for a variety of fundraisers. She is in her second year of a Psychology degree at the U of R and is pursuing a career in law. She believes youth are an important part of Rotary and advocates this belief through her involvement in Rotaract and ROTEX. Richard concluded his introduction by noting that our guest is excited to be here today to discuss the return of Rotaract to Regina.
    Karla thanked the Club for the opportunity to share the kinds of things the Rotaract Club Regina Auxilium is undertaking as they restructure the Club's presence in Regina. The Club began its "reintroduction" in October/November 2020 and have worked to fit this activity into their busy University class schedule. She began by introducing us to the 7 members of the current club, which while a "community" based Club, is currently comprised of University of Regina students.
President is Chelsea Ries, a former member of the Interact Club in Regina and now in the 4th year nursing student in the SC BScN program. Susana Alarcon, is Secretary, is in her 4th year of Therapeutic Recreation at the U of R and has a Rotary history in Interact and as an exchange student to Belgium in 2012-2013. Karla is the Club Treasurer. Graydon Eskwich, lives in Melfort and in his 1st year of Film Production at the U of R and is a Member of the Club. Kali Ann Friesen, is also a member of Rotaract, and is in Grade 12 at LeBoldus and was a Rotary Exchange student to Sweden in 2019-2020. Ryan Grabarczyk is new to Rotary and is in 4th year of a psychology degree at the U of R. Alandra Zimmer, who lives in Manitoba is in her 2nd year of a Chemistry Degree, and was introduced to Rotary as a short-term exchange student to Finland in 2018.
    The Club has undertaken 3 fundraiser which consisted of a Clothing drive for the Indigenous Warm up Shelter in Regina where they collected 650 pounds of clothing; a Burger night for the Saskatchewan Cancer Foundation where they raised $700.00 for the Regina Cancer Patient Lodge; and, together with the Rotary Club of Regina Oskaya, they are "adopting a park". Future projects are to assist in stocking the Community fridge, PolioPlus, and working to adopt COVID-19 safe fundraising initiatives.
    Karla welcomed us to assist their Club by promoting their Club to Youth in our various communities; promote and share their fundraising events on our social media; and, involve their club in our fundraisers.
   Thank you, Karla, for a quality job of introducing Regina Eastview to Rotaract's Return to Regina, but more specifically for being part of the leadership team making this happen. Congratulations!
Karla Friesen, Treasurer, Rotaract Club of Regina Auxilium
“Rotaract clubs bring together people ages 18 and older to exchange ideas with leaders in the community, develop leadership and professional skills, and have fun through service.
In communities worldwide, Rotary and Rotaract members work side by side to take action through service. From big cities to rural villages, Rotaract is changing communities like yours (ours).”

Rotary's 5 Core Values Share Similarity with
8 Pillars of Positive Peace
PDG Chris Offer’s March 29th Zone 28 & 32 Face Book post with this observation.

"There is a persuasive nexus between Rotary’s 5 core values and the 8 pillars of Positive Peace of IEP (Institute for Economics and Peace), a strategic partner with Rotary. Rotary’s core values represent the guiding principles of Rotary’s culture, including what guides members’ priorities and actions. For example, low levels of corruption, free flow of information, and equitable distribution of resources relate to Rotary’s core value of Integrity. Rotary’s core value of Leadership links to well-functioning government and sound business environment. Diversity correlates to acceptance of the rights of others."
FELLOWSHIP HIGHLIGHTS
  • It was like having a visiting Sergeant-At-Arms to watch Past President Jack Wozniak use his charm to treat members with respect and appreciation;
  • We are all invited to the Wozniak Ponderosa on April 10th to dig stones out of multiple piles of manure on the garden plots which received this fertilize last fall - the promise is barbecued delights in a socially distanced "social" event;
  • Sounds like a page out of my childhood and youth years on our family's mixed farm - stones and manure -
  • Jack did fine the President for something - an indiscretion that undoubtedly was prefabricated;
  • Sam Berg was delighted to tell us that he received his vaccination this morning;
  • Gary Carlson told us Jessie had her cataract surgery and she can see better already;
  • Richard Schwan was most pleased to be at today's meeting, having been absent for a number of weeks - he felt really bad and felt he deserved to be financially punished - he tearfully pledged to send the Club Treasurer $20.00;
  • WOW, sometimes guilt pays dividends;
  • Season Weekend Blessings to all - see you next week!

Philosopher's Corner

"We can cure physical diseases with medicine,
but the only cure for loneliness, despair
and hopelessness is love.

There are many in the world who are dying for a piece of bread, but there are many more dying for a little love."
