HABITAT FOR HUMANITY!

    President Pat Dell called on Donna Parry to introduce our Habitat Saskatchewan Guests, Donna Watts and Tara Goulet. In her comments Donna noted Tara Goulet is Director of Family Services with Habitat Saskatchewan and in this role is, “helping break the cycle of poverty one family at a time”. Her life's work revolves around helping to change the lives of people in need and Habitat For Humanity provides an ideal place to be a change maker. Donna Watts is the Volunteer and Engagement Coordinator for Habitat Saskatchewan where she is able to connect volunteers with meaningful life enriching opportunities to make a difference.
   Tara Goulet began her presentation by indicating that in February 2021 Habitat Saskatoon, Habitat Prince Albert and Habitat Regina amalgamated to form Habitat Saskatchewan, and as a provincial organization they help create Habitat builds across the province - Yorkton, Estevan, Melfort, Swift Current, North Battleford, etc. Tara shared a video which introduced us to the important work being undertaken focusing on the eligibility criteria, required involvement of selected as home owners, the role of volunteers and where they are required.
    Habitat For Humanity believes everyone should have a safe and decent place to live. Their MISSION is, "...to break the cycle of poverty through affordable homeowner-ship." We learned Habitat families purchase their homes at fair market value. They pay an interest free, zero down payment mortgage set at 25% of their annual income.  To become a Habitat homeowner, candidates must meet the following basic requirements:
  • Be in need of safe and affordable housing
  • Have stable gross household income is between $32,000 and $66,500
  • Have lived in Canada for at least three (3) years
  • If in Regina must have lived in Regina for at least two (2) years
  • Have not declared bankruptcy in the last two (2) years
  • Willingness to partner with Habitat Regina
  • Volunteered a minimum of 500 hours for Habitat
Candidates meeting these criteria, may be eligible to become a Habitat homeowner.
     Habitat for Humanity Regina relies on volunteers to help local families build strength, stability, and self-reliance through homeownership. Volunteers are welcomed to the Build Site and at the Habitat Regina ReStore. Volunteers can come as an individual, with a group of friends, or even as a team-building day with one's co-workers. Habitat for Humanity is all about providing a "hand up" rather than a "hand out".
    Donna and Tara also explained that the Habitat for Humanity Regina ReStore also accepts donations of new and used building materials and household items from local businesses and individuals. So if you have items in your home that could be reused, bring them to the Restore, and these donations are sold to provide funding to Habitat for Humanity Regina to build homes for local low-income families. It is a wonderful community service outlet for those "gently used" items in your home and shop.
    Thank you Tara and Donna for sharing the story of Habitat Saskatchewan and the contribution Habitat For Humanity makes to the communities in which they "build" and the impact you have on the families you support.

FELLOWSHIP HIGHLIGHTS
  • A great 30 person turnout for today's ZOOM Meeting;

  • Leo Ell guessed Saskatchewan's current flag was officially recognized in 1992, and we all learned this happened in 1969;
  • Peter Peters was way out on the number of lakes in the Province and learned it was nearly 100,000, with the largest being Lake Athabasca;
