WORLD POLIO DAY &

OCTOBER BUSINESS MEETING!

    In keeping with Regina Eastview's focus on transparency, today was the monthly Business meeting where Officers and Directors report on their respective contribution to the previous week's Directors meeting. However, President Pat Dell indicated that the report portion would follow a recognition of World Polio Day which Toshi Shinmura indicated in his announcement would be highlighted today.
    President Pat invited Peter Peters to introduce this recognition. Peter referred to the "must read" article in the October issue of ROTARY featuring WHO Polio Chief, Aidan O'Leary , in which O'Leary shares a road map for moving forward on polio eradication. Peter also provided a brief overview of establishing the Polio Plus program, initiated by Rotary International, in partnership with WHO, UNICEF and the US Center of Disease Control. From the 1000 cases of polio diagnosed each and every day in 1988, to two cases of wild polio diagnosed in the first 9 months of 2021, the shift has been dramatic. He noted that over this 36 year period, Regina Eastview has contributed to the Polio Plus program 21 years and will be doing so again this year, and over this time has contributed to just under $90,000.00 (US).
    Jean-Marc shared a video featuring PR President Shekhar Metha speaking to the importance of World Polio Day 2021. President Shekhar spoke eloquently about the importance of the program and the role each Rotarian can play in bringing the number of polio cases to ZERO. Please share the video. Thank you for helping  the world get to this important number.

Business Meeting highlights included:
  • Doreen Pankewich (Treasurer) reported  the Golf Tournament yielded a profit of $5,100;
  • Peter Peters (ISP Ctte) highlighted The Rotary Foundation's approval of including the construction of a kitchen (below) as part of the completed 3-classroom Ripple Effect project at Sector Barrios School in Guatemala;
  • Agbor told us of his participation in a very meaningful virtual ShelterBox Conference last Saturday. He brought greetings from ShelterBox with their thanks for Eastview ongoing support. He and Russ will be bringing regular reports to the ISP Ctte and will  encourage member support and advocacy for ShelterBox;
  • Sam Berg (Community Services) advised their committee now consists of 6 members who are sorting through initiatives looking for support;
  • In Charles Sadzamare's (Fund Raising) absence, President Pat encouraged Ham Sales and Jean-Marc encouraged participation in the Restaurant Raffle which will certainly break even this year; members encouraged to take bottles and cans to any SARCAN's Drop and Go;
  • John Van Koll (Membership) - we were reminded we are all on the member-ship Committee - more development plans in the new year;
  • President Pat is looking for a venue in which to hold a Christmas "function".
So ended the reporting. Thank you all for helping Regina Eastview's Wheel turn.

FELLOWSHIP HIGHLIGHTS
  • Sergeant-At-Arms Richard Schwan was in good form and continued to educate members on "things Rotary", by inviting selected members to respond to multiple choice questions;
  • Before the Sergeant got started PP Jean-Marc Nadeau donated $10.00 to save himself the embarrassment of not knowing the answer - Richard sensed he was on a roll;
  • Zarin Zavery let us know that Rotarians around the World collectively contributed 47 million hours of voluntary service in the name of Rotary;
  • Agbor Agbor wrong choice helped us understand that had it not been for Polio Plus, 19 million children would have been paralyzed by polio since 1988;
  • From Pat Dell's poor selection we learned that TRF contributed $307 million to the COVID pandemic in the Rotary year 2020-2021;
  • From John Van Koll's observation and the support of others, we were pleased to conclude that the 2 remaining polio endemic countries are Pakistan and Afghanistan;
  • We learned from Al Hoeft that he and his bride are going somewhere to celebrate their 39th Wedding Anniversary - it started with a "w" and might be in Saskatchewan;
  • Sam commended Al Hoeft, not only for the wedding milestone, but more particularly for the important work he does as reflected in the article on page 2 of October 20th Leader Post;
  • Not much money generated, but education is a priceless gift;
  • Enjoy autumn - see you next week!
