Regina Eastview's November 21st meeting was an Off-Site gathering at the new Metro Liquor Store in Acre 21, in a very new mall just off Chuka Boulevard in south-east Regina. Attendees arrived bearing the food which was to go with the wines, including several different cheeses, French bread, crackers, delicious cold cuts of meat, sausage, olives, and cabbage rolls, with butter tarts and Nanaimo bars.
Host Andrew explained the object of the evening was to pair different wines with foods which are usually eaten at Christmastime, and also to suggest wines which would make excellent Christmas gifts! Our host took the group through the process of tasting each of 7 selected wines. Firstly, color, (wine in a glass is held in front of a sheet of white paper), secondly, smell, (does it smell like apples and cinnamon, peaches or mango, wood and vanilla or earthy?). Then attendees were instructed to take a tiny sip, and swill it around in one's mouths, then a second sip while pinching our noses, (to assess sweetness), then to take another sip, swallow and savor the “after-taste”!
Andrew had made an eclectic selection of wines, starting with three different white wines including a Gruen Rheingau Riesling, which, although sweet, could be paired with German Sausage, Christmas lunch, or a rich and creamy dessert. The third wine tasted was a blend from the Niagara Peninsula, with a substantial percentage of Chardonnay, which could be paired with a seafood chowder.

Three red wines were tasted, including a Varga Egri Bikaver Classicus from Egar, Hungary, which, could be, (and was), paired with regional specialties, such as cabbage rolls! The second red wine was Baglio Normanno Nero d’Avola, from Sicily, which had been matured in French oak, and was a reddish-brown color. This would go well with salmon, or duck. The third red, Castano Barric Monastrell Ecologico, from Yecla in Spain, was a full-bodied high-tannin red wine matured in oak imported from Wisconsin. This would go well with goose or any dark meat. The last wine tasted was Clos Lapeyre Jurancon Moelleux, from France, which could be consumed as a sweet table wine or as a dessert wine. It was delicious when paired with Doreen’s home-made butter tarts.

The lateness of this bulletin has to do with my (PHP) techological ineptness.
