Heather Gosselin and Sheila McKague, two Regina Grandmothers represented this Regina community to tell us about their focus in raising funds for the Stephen Lewis Foundation for African grandmothers challenged with raising their grandchildren following the HIV AIDS epidemic.
Guest Speakers Heather Gosselin and Sheila McKague
"The Stephen Lewis Foundation (SLF) works with community-level organizations which are turning the tide of HIV & AIDS in Africa by providing care and support to women, orphaned children, grandmothers and people living with HIV & AIDS. Since 2003, we have funded over 1700 initiatives, partnering with more than 325 community-based organizations in the 15 African countries hardest hit by the global AIDS pandemic.
These grassroots groups are the lifeline for their communities: they provide counselling and education about HIV prevention, care and treatment; distribute food, medication and other necessities; reach the sick and vulnerable through home-based health care; help orphans and vulnerable children access education and work through their grief; and support grandmothers caring for their orphaned grandchildren."
A glimpse of the Regina Grandmothers focus
Functioning on the precept that, "Miracles are possible when the human spirit is released", Heather and Sheila with the use of power point slides shared stories of successful projects being carried out in 6 African countries. These initiatives are realized with the support of funds raised by the 240 Grandmothers 4 Grandmothers groups across Canada.
