AN INTRODUCTION, OR REINTRODUCTION,

TO EACH OTHER!

After attendees at today's meeting stared at each other for a time, all the while exchanging pleasantries, finally Jeff Barber let us know that President Pat Dell would not be here. He then advised that he would be "in charge" of the meeting, a meeting where, he noted, the scheduled Guest Speaker was unavailable, a couple of other presenter options did not "pan out", but we were not to worry, he "had a plan".
And Jeff did. One might liken it to a grade 3 class where the teacher is sick and the loved Teaching Assistant tells the class to put away their books, "we are going to play games for the whole period"! Jeff suggested, after 2 years of isolation, or semi-isolation with our connection being through ZOOM, Rotary's "fellowship" pillar has suffered. Today, we were told, would be about getting to know one another in a fun way, it would be an introduction or a re-introduction to one another where we would learn "stuff" about each other.
First, Jeff asked:
1) What is something that most people do not know about you? We learned Doug Keam is a Volunteer with Access Communications; Zack Dumont has a good "carpenter" feel and likes to build things with wood - decks and sheds are examples;
Ann Grahame loves horses and recounted sharing the heat from an open oven door with a gangly legged new born colt; Gary Carlson was gravely ill during mid-teens where survival was unsure and he is feeling blessed at 84 years of age; Jeff Barber, at the age of 20 had his name changed, and no he is not related to the Barber's in Weyburn (where they used to live).
2) "How many of you admit to having a tattoo"? Two members admitted to mutilating there otherwise unblemished bodies - both shared the painful agony of this choice.
3) "Who proposed marriage and what was significance of the result (or something like that)"?
Al Hoeft proposed 40 years ago, Karen said "yes” and Al had to sell his snowmobile to pay for the ring; John Van Koll proposed to Kathy on a Christmas Eve because this had to be coordinated with work schedules.
4) "What was your first car"? Vic Wiebe - a 1953 Plymouth from his first wife's Dad; Peter Neufeldt - it was an Envoy which he purchased jointly with this brother.
5) "Was there a dispute between you and your partner in the selection of names for your children"? Doug Mortin advised that son "Michael" was initially a "Justin", but after sleeping on it (and one suspects generating all the courage in his now "father" role) he returned to the Hospital to declare to Leslie, "He cannot be a 'Justin' - no child should be a Justin", he whispered!
6) "What was your high school graduation theme? And what did you wear"? Ted could not recall a theme, but he recalled in detail the dapper suit he wore, for this occasion and a host of follow-up events.
The final game was a "Guessing" game. Having studied the Club's Blue Membership Binder he would advance clues and ask members to guess "who is this member"? Jeff put up $10.00 and after the first clue for all subsequent clues the $10.00 would be reduced by $1.00. 3 members identified and Jeff happily contributed $26.00 to the Club.
President Elect Jeff Barber, although there was no doubt, today you demonstrated you are ready for the role of President. Thank you, for making this a fun day!

MARCH
Water and Sanitation Month in Rotary

When people have access to clean water and sanitation, waterborne diseases decrease, children stay healthier and attend school more regularly, and mothers can spend less time carrying water and more time helping their families.

How Rotary makes help happen - Through water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) programs, Rotary’s people of action mobilize resources, form partnerships, and invest in infrastructure and training that yield long-term change.

The Family of Rotary
  • Shreedhar Jachak brought greetings from two former members of Regina Eastview - Ted Tajada and Maja Starovic;
  • Tania Woroby is currently in the General Hospital and she would welcome calls on her cell phone (306-209-2460);
  • Clarence Krause participated in today's meeting from his hospital bed in the Pasqua (thanks to ZOOM Technology). Clarence is waiting to be transfered to William Booth or Wascana Rehab Centre for treatment of his recent back injury:

FELLOWSHIP HIGHLIGHTS
  • Sergeant-At-Arms Richard Schwan, stepped away slightly from his usual "all things Rotary" education approach, to somber reflection on the action taken by Rotary International in response to the intensifying conflict in Ukraine. He shared with us that The Rotary Foundation has created an official channel for donors around the world to contribute funds to support the relief efforts. TRF has designated its Disaster Response Fund as the main avenue for contributions. For more details please go to:

  • On the lighter side:
  • Ann Grahame was delighted to share that the LeBouldus Ladies Curling foursome won the Regional Tournament and are in Swift Current competing in Provincials;
  • Have a great week.
