FUNDRAISING IDEAS WITH TIM COWAN FROM THE ROTARY CLUB COMOX!
Following welcoming comments from President Al and the Land Acknowledgement, Jeanne Alexander introduced Tim Cowan, a long time member of the Rotary Club of Comox. Tim noted that Comox is a coastal city of 15,000 with about 70,000 in the Comox Valley. Pre-COVID, their Rotary Club had 70 members. Now, like many Rotary clubs, they have 50 registered Rotarians. Tim spoke about their number of fundraisers demonstrating great enthusiasm and ambition in the Club. 'Running of the ducks' is one project the Club has had for a few years. Fundraising was diminished significantly during COVID. After the first 2 years, they conducted one online and in 2023 a hybrid -- selling 1000 tickets in person and 3000 online.
Sponsorships helped their totals significantly. Another project is the sale of candied, smoked and gluten free salmon held during the Christmas season where they netted $15,175. The Whisk(e)y Fest 2024 netted the club almost $19,000--an enjoyable gathering of whisky or whiskey tasting (the spelling depends on the country where the product originated). A community shredding fundraiser was another successful event which provided an outlet for people to rid themselves of confidential documents and at the same time raise club funds.
All of the fundraisers were well organized with recording and observations of ways to improve the process the following year. They operated with many volunteers. Costs for all were investigated and certain businesses canvassed for help with supplies and equipment rentals/purchases.
We learned a number of things from Tim's presentation--one that the Comox Club is very engaged and always demonstrating 'Service Above Self'. Their projects promote fellowship in the community involving a large area and population thereby earning significant funds for Rotary projects. Thank you Tim for your presentation. Best wishes to your club in all their future projects.

Today a Rotary Foundation moment featured a Rotary story about Polio Plus and the difficulties in some countries getting the vaccine to children. R.I. spares no effort in collaboration with its partners to ensure that every child gets the precious vaccine. Rotary has contributed over $1billion dollars to this effort since the program began in the mid-80's. We consider Rotary as one of our many blessings in this world.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY
A CLOSING MESSAGE FROM THE ROTARY INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE IN SINGAPORE:
Fostering understanding was a central theme of the day, as Rotary Peace Fellows María Antonia Pérez and Clara-Valentine Tigenoah celebrated the 25th year since the Rotary Peace Centers program was announced.
“To believe in peace is to have hope, and to do so, one must be both stubborn and optimistic, and be eager to persist and make a difference,” Pérez said. Rotary International President Gordon R. McInally emphasized Rotary’s long-standing commitment to building peace and noted that the topic has been a key interest almost since Rotary began. Read more at:

Doug Mortin was happy to have the promotional material out to members on the Rotary Riders 2024 event and to have received some donations;
President Al spent some days recently in Yellowknife where he witnessed a granddaughter's graduation and another announced she would soon be making him a great grandfather. Al is now under the illusion this last event will make him old. Well maybe, but“Getting old is like climbing a mountain; you get a little out of breath, but the view is much better!” —Ingrid Bergman
