MEDIATORS BEYOND BORDERS INTERNATIONAL (MMBI) WITH REINY ORTEGA CUBAS!

Donna Parry introduced Reiny Ortega Cubas, a civil lawyer and a tenured professor from the National University of Mexico. She has a Masters' degree in conflict resolution from the University of Barcelona, and has training from Texas and Saskatchewan.  She is a mediator and a parent coordinator authorized by early dispute resolution of Saskatchewan. In February 2020, Reiny created the mediation practice group online, a group that continues running today with the Alternative Dispute Resolution Institute of Saskatchewan. She is a proud member of Mediators Beyond Borders International and also Mediators Beyond Borders Canada.
Reiny worked in the judiciary for over 14 years in different areas, including appeal and “Amparo”, later becoming the General Director of the Federal Electoral Prosecutor Office in Mexico. She encountered mediation while in charge of the penal area of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Center of the Mexico City Tribunal. As a General Director of the adversarial system training (SETEC) she managed the curriculum and training of mediators, policemen, investigators and lawyers on the new system. She loves to work in conflict resolutions and created a manual of peace with/for elementary schools. She has lived in Saskatchewan for six years.
Reiny began by saying it is bias to believe we are equal to others in gender, religion, profession or countries.  Diversity is the rule.  There is nobody equal!  That is a wonderful thing.  She noted that Decision making is power!  Who decides has it: Are we willing to share it?   Reiny noted that everything starts with empathy--First empathy to myself.  We need to observe--what happened?  Emotion--what am I feeling?  Needs--what do I need?  Request--what is being asked?

Thank you Reiny for sharing your wisdom with club members on this complex subject.

report it was a little muddy.
Pictures indicate that in spite of the heat and the occasional storm, the garden plot at Jack Wozniak's property has done well, thanks to the efforts of a few dedicated club members.  (Photos provided by Jack Wozniak and Peter Peters).

FELLOWSHIP HIGHLIGHTS
  • Sam Berg, Director of the Community Services Committee provided a detailed report in recognition of World Literacy Day Sept. 8.  The report will be sent out in a separate email.  Thank you Sam for sharing your report.
  • Sergeant Richard Schwan was in fine form today and, serious about his role, has researched the duties of the Sergeant--to maintain order with dignity, to keep members informed and promote knowledge.  He carried out this task by asking various members questions about Rotary--3 of the main focus areas of Rotary--clean water, maternal & child health & education.  Another question--the first Rotary motto--"One profits most who serves best" and later "Service Above Self." Third question--why does the Rotary year begin July 1--"because it comes after June 30"offered by Peter Peters was not accepted.  The answer involved timing with the convention and for clubs to prepare year end documents.
  • Peter Peters and Jean-Marc found out that lame excuses were not accepted.
  • Happy bucks--Peter Peters offered 20 happy bucks in recognition of all contributions made  to his M.S ride which he will do this weekend as will riding buddy, Sam Berg.  $7500 has been raised for the cause.  Congratulations.
  • Clarence and Donelda celebrated 56 years of marriage on Sept. 4.  Congratulations.
  • Peter N. had $5 worth of happy bucks after a visit with daughter and family from Toronto--the first since the beginning of COVID.
  • Ann had 'sort of' happy bucks--her water heater leaked on the weekend--and after a short wait she now has hot water again.
  • Doug Mortin had happy bucks, as did Peter N., for the over $16,000 raised on their Rotary Ride the end of August. This year's ride was in memory of Floyd Manz, a long time rider with the group.  Along with fellow riders, Gregg Bathgate (R.C of Moose Jaw Wakamow), Malcolm Bloos (nephew to the late Floyd Manz), Michelle Desautels of Regina, Peter N. and Doug will journey 600KM to Melfort to deliver the money to Brian and Darlene Cocks, treasurer(s) of District 5550 World Community Service, and return with receipts for donors.  Well done Riders.  The children of Guatemala thank you.
  • Allen offered $5 worth of happy bucks for the Winnipeg Bombers win on Labour Day weekend.  There was virtually no agreement that the win was happy for anyone else in Sask.
  • Jean-Marc had happy bucks for working with a young librarian, Cara Bradley, at the U of R-daughter of Gail-on platform choices as he works toward completion of his PhD. A lovely compliment that I shall pass on with motherly pride.  Thank you.
  • One of the fines to Peter Peters and Sam Berg, for perceived misdemeanors, was for $5000 each for speaking out of turn!  It should be noted that the Sergeant is a banker.  Immediately he granted $5000 back to each.  As President Pat pointed out 'he giveth and he taketh away."
  • That completes the news for this week.  An excellent meeting.  Enjoy the week ahead.
