SASKATCHEWAN WRITERS’ GUILD

VIRTUAL WRITER-IN-RESIDENCE -

MARIE POWELL!

     At the prescribed time which was something after 12:35 P.M., President Jeff Barber called the loud people in the Delta and the seemingly silent people on ZOOM to order, and welcomed us to the Rotary Club of Regina Eastview. Allen Hillsden led in the singing of our National Anthem. Our land Acknowledgement was shared and our visitors were recognized and appreciated. Jeanne Alexander, our Club's Program organizer was invited to introduce our Guest Speaker, Marie Powell.
     This is what we learned from Jeanne: Marie Powell is an award-winning author, journalist, researcher, and creative entrepreneur. Her castle-hopping adventures across North Wales, a part of her ancestral homeland, resulted in her medieval fantasy series Last of the Gifted, set in 13th Century Wales. Marie is also the author of now 46 children’s books with such publishers as Scholastic Education and Amicus, along with short stories and poetry in such literary magazines as RoomsubTerrain, and Sunlight Press. Among her five university degrees, Marie holds a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Creative Writing from the University of British Columbia. She is currently the Saskatchewan Writers’ Guild Virtual Writer-in-Residence, and she lives on Treaty 4 territory in Regina, Saskatchewan. In her spare time, she experiments in gardening and medieval cooking, and negotiates for space at the kitchen table with her small calico cat: Marie to write, and the cat to stare out the window (or vice versa). You can find Marie at mariepowell.ca.
     Marie began her presentation by reading a portion from her novel, LAST of the GIFTED. We were (I should say, I was) captured by this skilled voice and were caught in a story that seemed to be about a soaring hawk, no it was an animal on the ground, no, or was it something else, perhaps a shadow in the trees, and...Then she closed the book and talked about what it means to be the Saskatchewan Writers' Guild Virtual Writer-in-Residence in Regina Saskatchewan.
     Marie has the good fortune, or the challenge, of looking after all of the province outside the major centers in the province, namely Saskatoon and Regina. This means she counsels and mentors aspiring writers, who are looking to enhance their self-interest and/or writing skill. Marie is also involved in teaching ESL to immigrants to Canada and in the process develops a connection with some of these individuals to the extent they wish to become "writers". Through Marie's encouragement and assistance a book of short stories by a group of individuals has been published. Her books are available in the Regina Public Library and available in book stores and Amazon.
Marie Powell, thank you for sharing in our day.

5 WAYS TO IMPROVE WATER QUALITY AND ACCESS TO WATER
By Rotary Service and Engagement

According to the United Nations, there are still 663 million people around the world that don’t have access to clean drinking water.* When people, especially children, have access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene, they lead healthier and more successful lives.
These Girls are part of the noted 663 Million
Rotary members integrate water, sanitation, and hygiene into education projects. When children learn about disease transmission and practice good hygiene, they miss less school. And they can take those lessons home to their families.
The Family of Rotary
  • A big THANK YOU to our Club’s Community Service Committee for diligently working to double our contribution to Chili For Children (C4C) this year. The District’s Matching Grant of $1,000.00 doubles the difference we make in the lives of Regina’s C4C beneficiaries -        this is to Imagine Rotary;
  • Unrecognized Birthdays recognized today - Doreen Pankewich - March 5th; Doug Archer - today, March 23rd; and; Toshi Shimura, March 24th; Allen Hillsden led in "Happy Birthday' and it was good;
  • We were saddened to learn that Kevin Hayes resigned from Eastview as he is relocating to Langley B.C.- Kevin Hayes, you go with our best wishes;
  • President Jeff presented Long Term Service Awards to Doreen Pankewich for her 30 years of service through Rotary, and Dave Edwards was recognized for his 35 years of Service through Rotary - Doreen and David, thank you for your combined 65 years of appreciated service to Rotary's  business of "Doing Good in the World" - you make us proud.

FELLOWSHIP HIGHLIGHTS
  • Attendance was wonderful - 20 on smiling faces at the Delta and another 8 on-line - you made this a great day;
  • Tania Woroby shared appropriate Words of Wisdom from  Eleanor Roosevelt which are as applicable today as when uttered;
  • The elusive 50/50 "not blue" marble remained untouched for another week, much to Dave Edwards disappointment and those in the room for he promised to share the projected millions up for grabs;
  • Al Hoeft was Sergeant-At-Arms and began by testing the wisdom of PDGs in the room - Peter P guessed Rotary's current membership is 1.4 Million and this was deemed correct;
  • Peter Neufeldt's guess was a bit off on the 47 million volunteer hours of service Rotarians provide annually;
  • Having recited RI's Vision Statement with appropriate pastoral emphasis: Together, we see a world where people unite to take action to create lasting change - across the globe in our communities, and in ourselves. Sergeant Al invited responses from all present on what specific component of Rotary inspires us and keeps us in the Rotary Family - members shouted out - Ham donations during the Christmas drive; Adventures in Citizenship; MUNA; Commitment to literacy; focus on Peace; Ripple Effect Program; Adventures in Agriculture; RYLA: taking students to RYLA; Honouring Indigenous Peoples (HIP); and, other programs were identified which, as we join our hands "together", through our community and around the world, we make the Rotary we Imagine real.
  • Good job, Al Hoeft - the focus on our Vision Statement, needs to be our focus.
  • See you all next Friday - enjoy a fine "spring" week.
