CATHEDRAL VILLAGE ARTS FESTIVAL WITH NEW   MANAGER DON YOUNG!

    President Jeff Barber brought the 30 attendees to a form of order at 12:05 and welcomed us to the first day of Rotary's Disease Prevention and Treatment Month. This of course is one Rotary's seven Areas of Focus. After Acknowledging the Land from which our meeting was being broadcast, President Jeff introduced the meeting's Sergeant-At-Arms, Allen Hillsden, who did what our Sergeant's do - they educate, re-enforced a known truth I do not always retain what I read, and they raise money for identified indiscretions. The task of sharing today's WISDOM, fell to the President himself - he is a wise and thought provoking fellow. Following this Jeff invited Jeanne Alexander to introduce Guest Speaker Don Young.
    In her comments Jeanne noted Don came to Canada in 1966 from Glasgow, Scotland. He graduated from the University of Alberta in 1975, he freelanced for the Calgary Albertan and the Edmonton Journal before joining CBC Radio as a Senior Producer on the CBC radio show, Morningside. In 1982 he was a founding producer of CBC’s, The Journal, a nightly current affairs TV program. Since leaving the CBC for independent production, he has written and directed documentaries for a variety of clients including: CTV, Global, PBS, Fox Sports One, Doctors Without Borders, Discovery Canada, History Television, and the Sundance Channel. In 2008 he was appointed the Executive Producer of the CTV/Rogers Vancouver 2010 and London 2012 Olympic Games broadcast consortium where he commissioned over 400 athlete focused stories from the independent community. Following this Don was the founding partner of the Ottawa/Toronto based production, Those Canadians Media Group, which produced ‘snackable’ short form commercial content.
    Over his career, he won 3 Geminis, a Canadian Screen Award, an ACTRA Award, a Yorkton Film Festival Golden Sheaf, and a US Cable Emmy. His non-professional interests are in helping the under privileged members of our community use the narrative power of social media to bring their lives into the mainstream spotlight.  He presently lives in Regina.
    Don Young, recently came to Regina because his Granddaughter lives here and he thought it would be helpful to learn what it means to be a Grandpa. He believes he was selected for this role with the Cathedral Village Art Festival because of his media background and the sense that he is a person who understands the import-ance of knowing the audience you are expecting, or wishing to gather. In this instance it will have to do with clarifying the story of the Arts Festival and articulating it in such a way that, "the planted seeds will expand and thereby grow the Festival" into a more inclusive gathering of Regina's diverse population.
    Don sees three important factors for the May 2023 Arts Festival, namely:
  1. The need to bring in a younger, more diverse cultural community of volunteers;
  2. A focus on working with Sponsors, who are a critical part of the Festival's success. Sponsors need to be better informed about what they will get out of providing their support, and this needs to be determined as it must be specific to each sponsor;
  3. It is important to create a Succession Plan. This Plan must take into account the skills and abilities of new immigrants, so Festival stories will reflect our history, our current status and provide a glimpse of what is on the horizon.
    Don has been on the job for a month, and he leaves one with the sense that he has a good handle on where the Cathedral Village Arts Festival is and where it has the potential to go. Hopefully the Regina community can keep up.
Thank you, Don Young, for sharing a glimpse of a Festival of the future!
Don Young, Manager, Cathedral Village Arts Festival
What is your Rotary Club doing to focus your efforts on Disease Prevention and Treatment?

Disease Prevention and Treatment is one of Rotary's seven areas of focus. We believe good health care is everyone's right. Yet 400 million people in the world can't afford or don't have access to basic health care.

Disease Prevention and Treatment
Rotary's top priority is the eradication of polio, but our members take on far greater responsibilities to fight disease. They set up health camps and training facilities in undeveloped countries and in communities struggling with HIV/AIDS and malaria. They also design and build the infrastructure for doctors, nurses, governments, and partners to reach the one in six people in the world who can't afford to pay for healthcare. Your Donations at Work

All donations to The Rotary Foundation’s Disaster Response Fund from 3 March to 30 April 2022 were prioritized for use providing humanitarian aid to regions that are supporting Ukrainian refugees or other victims of the war.

Thanks to the generosity of donors around the world, we raised more than $15 million that funded over 400 grants that provided essential support to people impacted by the war in Ukraine.

  • Bill and Pat Fitzsimmons (Calgary) have reason to be in Regina to visit a new Granddaughter (and her parents) and would appreciate the opportunity to "house-sit" for Regina residents looking to get away from our winter - they can  be reached at:  20pfitz@gmail.com; or 403-201-7492
  • Allen Hillsden was Sergeant today and took the occasion to remind us to read our Rotary magazine (even if they are a couple of months old) for it could have financial implications;
  • But first Sergeant Allen wanted to know who had completed their Christmas shopping - if the answer was "yes" you got a Rotobuck (Allen and Al Hoeft were the "richer";
