WORLD POLIO DAY - CELEBRATION DINNER!

The Rotary Club of Regina Eastview spread the 2024 World Polio Day Celebration over two functions. The initial event took place at the Club's regular in-person noon meeting at the Delta on Thursday October 24th. On that occasion, we celebrated with two special presentations consisting of an overview of Rotary International's Polio Eradication journey. A journey which began with a 1978 3-H (Health, Hunger & Humanity) Grant, which helped immunize 6.3 million children in the Philippines against polio - it was this project that evolved into what we know as PolioPlus. This was provided by PDG Pat Chernesky. Pat told us the last diagnosed case of polio in Canada was in 1970. To give us a sense about what it means to actually experience polio, Gilda Treleaven-Graham shared her 1954 experience as a 'victim', and the consistent challenges of post-polio syndrome.
PolioPlus Celebration Dinner 2024
On Tuesday, October 29, was the World Polio Day Celebration Dinner at Lee's Chop Suey East, where 50 ticket purchasing guests experienced a Multi-Course (8 or 9) Chinese dining experience.

Evening Organizers &
Hosts, Toshi and Linda Shinmura
Because it was a diverse crowd of Rotarians, their friends and five U of R Rotaract Students the Host duo, Toshi & Linda, invited us to participate in an 'Ice Breaking' exercise. This created a delightful milling around the room meeting new people, as we searched out persons who could help us achieve an acceptable initialed response to the, "I have..."; "I believe..."; "I am..."; "I hope.."; questionnaire we each were challenged to complete to win one of three prizes - a new way to meet people.
A 'tip of the hat' to Toshi and Linda for putting this together and to all the attendees for participating in a delightful evening of fellowship, food and fun.
