MAYOR FOUGERE VISITS WITH EASTVIEW

The Mayor was introduced by Peter Neufeldt who noted some of the accomplishments of the past eight years under the Mayor's leadership. His education and living experiences in other parts of the world and Canada have given him the background to provide leadership in our city.  Speaking from his home in these pandemic times, Mayor Fougere talked about managing the city in a time of what he called: "Truly uncharted territory--with no blueprint."  He recognized immediately that it was important to maintain calm and manage the pandemic in Regina. He was grateful for the full support of his Council.  In early March, the Mayor gathered together the fire and police chiefs to discuss preparations for a pandemic.  Shortly after this they announced free parking, cancelled Council sessions, committee meetings and conferences, closed recreation facilities, established cleaning protocols, delayed tax payments to September,& developed a plan with non-profit organizations for the free lunch program.  An Emergency Order was established.  To this day 1000 lunches per day, 7 days a week are provided.  There were many other facets to the plan.
By fall the city will have an operating deficit of $21 million. 800 seasonal staff were laid off.  Now reopening is slowly happening with work on infrastructure projects.  The Mayor noted his pride in Regina and our country.  People seem to understand the need to control the virus, the disruption to their lives, lost business, & unemployment. He commended the leadership of Medical Health officer Dr. Shahab and the innovation of many determined to help others and survive.  Reginans  accepted discipline and surely we agree we have had excellent leadership.
Saturday, May 23, the R.C. of Kenora hosted a one day virtual District 5550 Conference.  M.C. was Len Mark.  The day was well-organized with a number of excellent speakers. Of special note were Kevin Lamoureux, a Professor from the University of Winnipeg who noted that poverty is about more than money.  There are Social Determinants of Health that need to be considered. Another impressive speaker was Kevin Chief, former member of the Manitoba Legislative Assembly.  Both have indigenous backgrounds and their passion is about reconciliation and repairing the relationship.  As well Kevin Chief's passion is developing opportunities for children and young people. Their work centers around the Circle of Courage.

Fellowship highlights
  • Sergeant Pat Dell invited us to share happy moments or in Jack's case not so happy:
  • Jack's soffit blew off in the wind again (it happened last year too) and a pine tree blew down which he, optimistically, replanted;
  • Peter Neufeldt had a large branch from a weeping willow blow into his window but did not break the window--a good news/bad news situation;
  • Pat has watched a family of baby squirrels carry out their individual antics--just like human families!
  • Shreedhar has a new great granddaughter--#3 great grandchild;
  • Allen Hillsden met Audrey Shing from the Delta walking her dog and she sent regards to Eastview, she expects it will be fall before the Delta reopens;
  • Takayoshi sent greetings to everyone and we send greetings back to you Takayoshi--stay safe;
  • Gary Carlson is celebrating his 82nd birthday today. Congratulations Gary and we wish you many more happy birthdays. Gary also sent congratulations to Bob Durston for the Neepawa Club on their video.
  • Greetings were received from Jeff Barber, with the library in Helsinki in the  background. He extended congratulations to all who participated in the video.
  • Jeanne Martinson sent greetings to the Club via Pat Dell.
  • Peter Neufeldt was on Zoom with the R.C. of Richmond who sent greetings to Eastview.
