SHELTERBOX RESPONDS:

SUPPORTING FAMILIES IN THE NEW NORMAL!

President Jean-Marc asked Peter Peters to introduce our Guest Speaker, Allison Kingston from ShelterBox Canada. From Peter, we learned our guest joined the ShelterBox Canada team in February 2020, assuming the role of Community Fundraising Coordinator. As a Rotaractor originally from the club of Sarnia-Lambton, and now from the Rotaract Club of Toronto, Allison Kingston is very excited to be able to bring her Rotary service into her work! After graduating from Carleton and trying various industries, an internship abroad settled her into the non-profit world where she hopes to make a lasting impact. Our guest spends most of her free time playing Roller Derby and becoming more fluent in French.
Using power point slides, Allison, was able to bring us into the ShelterBox world from the perspective of an employee, in the organization bringing "aid", and in sharing through word and image the impact of "aid" on recipients. From the beginning of ShelterBox in 2000, the organization has been in 97 countries, and since 2012 as a partner with Rotary International. While sensitive to the number of declared disasters occurring around the world, they are only able to assist in one out of five. Their highly trained "responders" stand ready to be assigned to the disaster site, where they work with local governments and Rotarians who take over leadership of delivering aid components.
Aid resources are packaged in such a way that appropriate material gets to the site from which they will be disbursed. Rotarians are familiar with the big green "box" which holds a 10 person tent, cooking supplies, water purification supplies, light source, etc. Allison noted that once the family receives the ShelterBox the components remains the family's. Families have made the tent into a small business outlet e.g. sewing centre; store.  More recently Shelter Kits have become a useful option as the contained supplies include shelter repair supplies and additional tools.
You are invited to watch Allison's presentation by clicking on the link at the top of the ROTOR.

Allison spoke about Burkina Faso, which is one of the fastest-growing displacement crises in Africa. Almost 1 million people have been forced to flee their homes due to extremist violence. The photo below becomes the new home.
Recently, in Ethiopia, working with IOM Ethiopia, ShelterBox supported more than 48,000 people with emergency shelter, blankets, kitchen sets, sleeping mats, mosquito nets, and water carriers.
