"TOASTMASTERS" with LAURA CHAMBERS!

President Elect (PE) Richard called on Jeanne Alexander to introduce our Guest Speaker, Laura Chambers , a Toastmaster Leader who may have ZOOM ‘ed in from Calgary. As a "Fellow Toastmaster", Jeanne deflected the challenge and asked our Guest if she might simply introduce herself.
Laura Chambers grew up in a small isolated community and got her early education in a 1-room school and seemingly believed that to be a unique experience. Her father then moved the family to Vancouver where our self acclaimed "introvert" guest lived in terror and was "speechless". Fast forward to 1988 when Laura Chambers joined Toastmasters, where obvious changes were made and she has become this competent gifted orator and was a delight to listen to and watch.
Laura prides herself as being one of Toastmasters greatest advocates. She spoke about the "Alliance" between Toastmasters International and Rotary International which was formalized in May, 2019, and drew from the strength of their many similarities and complementary differences. The opportunity for Toastmasters members is primarily to establish fellowship and network, and contribute more to communities and develop skills, which can best be used in their professional lives.     These skills are evaluated with their Club structure. Rotary members could be attracted to Toastmasters for the opportunity to develop skills and receive evaluations which would be beneficial in their role in Rotary. (As an aside, I just learned Toastmasters developed eight educational courses for Rotarians and Rotaractors, available on Rotary International’s Learning Centre - check these out).
Laura reminded us that communication is a combination of listening, talking, and watching what is going on, like "body" language. She introduced us to the "Pathways learning experience", which is an interactive and flexible education program and was created to help persons strengthen their communication and leadership skills. All this learning takes place in a fun atmosphere with others. Laura indicated that persons taking this pathway hcave; i) The opportunity to build more than 300 unique skillset competencies; ii) take 11 specialized learning paths; iii) this is all online content, affording you to learn anytime, anywhere; and iv) results real-world, transferable skills.
In the concluding portion of her presentation, Laura spoke about the Speech Craft digital experience which Toastmasters created for experienced members to help non-members become the best communicators. Working with a select group of "students" this process will boost a participant's confidence and improve their communication, public speaking, and leadership skills, within what is referred to as a, "safe Toastmasters environment".
In the Q and A we learned the annual Toastmaster membership fee is $150.00, but will vary depending on room costs and other frills - like a meal. There are 13 Toastmaster groups in Regina and we can get more information by contacting Brad Korbo at: bkorbo@sasktel.net 306-781-2127.
PE Richard thanked Laura for her quality presentation where her skills as a Toastmaster advocate were clearly evident.

The Family of Rotary
On October 13th we learned of Gordon Wicijowski's death and the following morning there was additional information shared by the family.
In reflecting on Gord's impact on Regina Eastview, our friend presented as a quiet, thoughtful, respected, wise gentlemen. In reading his Obituary in the Leader Post we learned, he carried the dictates of The Four-Way Test of Rotary to every aspect of his life. Gord did truly personify those four simple statements. When we sat down at his Rotary table or he joined the one where we sat, he was, "Gord" and we enjoyed and appreciated each other’s company in this unique world of Rotary Fellowship. It is both humbling and an honour to have dined and worked the magic of Rotary in the company of Gord Wicijowski.
This photo is Club Secretary Allen Hillsden attending Gord's Harbour Landing residence to present him with his 60 year Rotary Service Pin to Gord in 2021. Gord joined Rotary in 1961 and served as the Club's President in 1974-1975.
Thank you Gordon, for mentoring, "Service Above Self", we'll take it from here.

Philosopher's Corner

"We are what we imagine. Our very existence consists in our imagination of ourselves. Our best destiny is to imagine, at least, completely, who and what, and that we are. The greatest tragedy that can befall us is to go unimagined.”-
