"HOLD ON TO YOUR LIFE'S DREAM!" - CITYKIDZ REGINA!

President Jean Marc called on Cory Daly to introduce our Guest speaker Donna West, Branch Manager, CityKidz Regina. From Cory we learned Donna was raised on the family farm at Francis SK.  Her childhood dream to become a teacher was temporarily lost but “reclaimed” through involvement with children and youth in her church, where she taught Sunday School and the Church’s children’s outreach program.  Volunteering with this program, the dream of working full-time with under-privileged children began to crystalize. Employed with the Government of Saskatchewan, Donna began CityKidz Regina in September 2010 and 3 years later, she left her Government job and pursued CityKidz as a full-time endeavor.  It was here that she was able to fill that, "hard to fill void".  As a single parent, Donna understands the hardships many families who are part of the CityKidz program endure.  Donna's hope as Director of CityKidz is to encourage children and youth to not walk away from their dreams.  With the help and mentorship through CityKidz, she hopes to help children rise above their circumstances and remove barriers that stand in the way of pursing life-long dreams.
In her opening comments, Donna referred to the memorable McLean's article some 14 years ago which defined Regina's North Central area as “Canada’s Worst Neighbourhood.” This was a title that remained until only recently when it was sadly claimed by North Battleford. Sensing the community is one where "hope" is in short supply; knowing the High School "drop-out" rate is 43 %,  which reflects on the fact that the cycle is not about to change; their program currently works with 120 children (5 to 18 years of age), in a city where there are 15,000 children living in poverty; and, where gangs are an ever present threat to community peace and harmony; CityKidz has worked diligently at addressing the challenges faced in the community by doing a "Community Assessment"; What do you need in North Central?; Where would you want to be in 10 years?; What kind of "programming" is missing now and what would you like to see?; What would you, like to see in your neighbourhood?
Donna West, Branch Manager, CityKidz Regina
Response to these questions provides direction to the future of CityKidz Regina, who have 10 years of service in the community and are "here" to stay. Mindful of the challenges and knowing there are other organizations doing similar work in Regina, they are hopeful that working together, future North Central situations in other Regina communities can be averted. Please click the ZOOM meeting link above to get the whole of Donna's presentation and clear perspective on the important work of CityKidz Regina.
Thank you, Donna West!
