           THE STEPHEN LEWIS FOUNDATION -           IMPACT OF COVID 19!

President Jack Wozniak had the pleasure of introducing Guest Speaker Healy Thompson, Manager, Community Campaigns and Strategic Initiatives with the Stephen Lewis Foundation (SLF), head quartered in Toronto. Healy's presentation focused on the impact of COVID-19 on community-based responses to HIV, in sub-Saharan Africa; and, what African grassroots organizations are doing to make sure that communities affected by HIV & AIDS aren’t disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Healy stressed the point that for the past 17 years the SLF has partnered with community-level organizations which are turning the tide of HIV & AIDS in Africa by providing care and support to women, children orphaned by AIDS, grandmothers, and people living with HIV & AIDS. These 140 partnerships have been key in the success of their work, as local communities know best what they need and together the partners can plan and strategize how to move forward. COVID 19 has added a new dimension of stress because of the unknown which is complicated by isolation, social distancing, the need to access critical HIV medication, accessing sufficient nutritious food, and acquiring emotional support have historically been provided in a face to face setting. As in all parts of the world where citizens are dealing with the emotional trauma of isolation, domestic violence is one of the outcomes. Over the past 3-4 months, the SLF is working with their partners to ensure they have the necessary technology and modes of transportation to fulfill their responsibilities, and where these are lacking, are providing financial support so these shortcomings can be addressed.
Turning The Tide of HIV & AIDS in Africa
Healy indicated that while Sub-Saharan Africa has not experienced the COVID 19 pandemic case load to the extent seen in the USA or Italy, there is always the concern of the "next wave". However, to this point, existing health services have not been overwhelmed. One of the reason for the controlled number of cases, is that African countries shutdown their borders early on. The major challenge in much of this part of Africa is "hunger" and accessing sufficient nutritious food.

Never too young to lead - An increasing number of young Rotarians have accepted district-level positions that had traditionally been held by older members. In the 2019-20 Rotary year, 36 district governors are under the age of 50. These midcareer professionals have demanding jobs in medicine, education, tech, finance, and broadcasting. The Rotarian magazine asked six of them how they balance their professional, family, and volunteer activities. Read more.

FELLOWSHIP HIGHLIGHTS
  • Pat Dell has learned that by situating an over-sized ugly metal squirrel in your back yard will frighten happy playful "real" squirrels not only from consuming bird feeder resources, but getting them out of your yard;
  • Clarence Krause coached Pat Dell on the way to stop the rabbit family from eating the petunias in her flower bed, is by shaving Irish Spring bar soap around the flowers - rabbits will leave the flowers alone and look clean and refreshed!
  • Early warning - Rotary membership dues "are due" on July 1, 2020. I sure hope members of Regina Eastview will be committing to be part of the coming Rotary year which has as its Theme, Rotary Opens Opportunities.
  • It was great to see 31 plus people gathered around the Regina Eastview banner today. Thank you for coming.
  • See you next week.

Philosopher's Corner

"You know you are a farmer if
Your equipment is worth more than your house;
You plan family trips on a rainy day;
Your tan lines look like you’re still wearing a shirt;
You never eat dinner while the sun is still out;
Your family nights consists of truck rides checking out crops;
Your animals breakfast before you do;
You bring home newborn animals and don’t care how dirty the house gets;
You base your day on acres not hours;
Gravel dust is the color of your truck; and,
You fix most anything with Baler Twine."
