CHILI FOR CHILDREN WITH GREG STEVENSON!

     Today's Hybrid meeting saw a small crowd at the Delta and were pleased to have at least one person on ZOOM. Unfortunately the ZOOM invitation was circulated just before lunch and our apologies are extended for this oversight.
     We were all welcomed warmly by Regina Eastview President Elect Jayna Amadasun who was filling in for President Al Hoeft. PE Jayna assumed the role with grace and dignity expected of person aspiring to the role of President. Certainly, Regina Eastview's 'First Man in Waiting", Eghosa appeared to be fitting into his role with significant ease.
     PE Jayna moved through the meeting preliminaries - O' Canada with Allen Hillsden, gathering Blessing, Land Acknowledgement competently and called on Sam Berg to introduce our Guest Speaker Greg Stevenson.
    In his introduction, Sam suggested that Greg hardly needed an invitation as he is well known in the community and has attended meetings of Regina Eastview in the past. Greg's Mother, Theresa Maria Stevenson having recently returned to Regina some 50 years ago was sensitive to the number of hungry children in the community and began to prepare meals for some youth. This was the foundation for what became the Chili for Children Program in Regina and decade’s later Regina recognized Theresa Maria Stevenson by naming a Park in North Western Regina in her honour.
    From Greg we learned that his Mother was one special lady who had a heart for children and particularly children who "were malnourished", a term the family learned was more politically appropriate than referring to Children as "starving" - so malnourished became and has remained the focus. Chili for Children was incorporated in 1979 and continues to serve the community. Greg grew up with the belief you should honour your father and mother and you will have a long life and this has been his focus. It seems the Stevenson family were closely tied to the Jacob Bear Church located near the Manitoba-Saskatchewan border and serves as a spiritual haven for the family.
    During the school year, Chili for Children provides school lunches for 1000 students in three of Regina's Community Schools. Over the last few years security has become exceedingly tight in these schools and makes getting access to these facilities is difficult which altered the volunteer service opportunity, Greg spoke about the great support they receive from Sobeys and Safeway stores. They are also receive beef and pork donations from outside Regina with the only cost relating to processing the meat. Vegetables are important for their feeding programs and their soups are tasty and include quantities of vegetables. Tolerance for children 'bad mouthing' the food means they will not be allowed to access the service in the future. Seems, children have learned, that the food is really better than no food.
    Grabbing hold of his Mother's vision of happy well-nourished children brings joy to son Greg.
Greg, thank you for continuing to share your Mother's VISION.
Greg Stevenson

The Family of Rotary
  • It was another "who has been married the longest" happy dollar tussle - Sam Berg spoke of 55 years tomorrow, Jeff Barber admitted to a mere 41, but that was some 10 days down the road, and Richard Taylor admitted being in the middle recalling he and Judy married in the latter part of the 1970's - he was probably more specific (the scribes faulty hearing);
  • Allen Hillsden has given up his land line, so you must call him on his cell which is 306-539-9379;
  • Below, Community Service Committee Chair Sam Berg presented Greg Stevenson with a Cheque for $3,000.00 for the Chili For Children Program;
  • This is a program which Regina Eastview has supported for 20 plus years initially with funds and volunteers but since COVID only financially;
  • Today's donation was comprised of $1,500.00 from the Club which received a Matching Grant from District 5550;
  • Congratulations Community Service and Regina Eastview.
(L to R) Greg Stevenson, Sam Berg, P.E. Jayna Amadasun & Vic Wiebe
