DISTRICT 5550 YOUTH EXCHANGE WITH LEANNE KESSLER!

InIntroduced by her mother, Eastview's own, Joyce Butler, who told us of Leanne's youth exchange to Japan in 1991 sponsored by the R. C. of Regina Eastview.  Leanne graduated from Regina's Campbell Collegiate in 1990.  Leanne's counselor was Pat Frew, former Eastview member.  The benefits of the exchange to Leanne were enormous, and being witness to this was what brought Joyce into membership in Eastview.
Leanne noted that in addition to her parents and the Club, she received good support from her high school teachers.  Leanne's daughter graduated in 2020 and she noted that due to the many complications for teachers from the pandemic, their main focus was on helping students survive--there was no interest or time to think about travel, which was cancelled anyway.  Following her exchange, Leanne was involved in chartering a Rotaract Club in Alberta.  Ten years ago she joined the R.C. of Meewasin in Saskatoon.  Leanne came up through the ranks in youth services from hosting and counselling students to serving as Outbound Chair in the District, Co-Chair of the District Youth Exchange to Chair.  Following postponement due to the pandemic the Youth Exchange program will begin again July 1, 2022. There is current local interest as well as interest in countries abroad.
Leanne Kessler
In addition to the information exchange students receive prior to embarking on their journey, there are life 'B' points that are shared with them: Be First, Be curious, Be on purpose, Be grateful, Be of Service, Be here, now.  For Rotary clubs, remember to find students where they are.  The program is intensive and busy and we were reminded that 'we can sleep when we are old.'  Some of us are already there!
Thank you Leanne, for your presentation and the thought-provoking points you gave us all to think about.
POLIO NEWS FROM AFGHANISTAN
See the above article for more information.  Here is the concluding paragraph: "Rotary has just 35 members in Afghanistan.  They inspire me daily with their courage and perseverance.  The polio program has always been politically neutral in every country. Rotary and our partners work with the leaders who are in charge. We now work with new leaders in Afghanistan.  Rotary funds WHO and UNICEF.  We do not send any funds to the governments nor to groups other than WHO and UNICEF.   We monitor the spending they do on our behalf very closely.   We have never been closer to eradicating polio in Afghanistan. We will continue to work with the Afghani people and our partners to finish what we began over 35 years ago."
Michael K. McGovern, Rotary International Polio Plus Committee Chair
Best news coming out of Afghanistan for months;
Thank you to Peter Peters for providing this information.
The Family of Rotary
  • President Pat was away today due to a death in the family.  Our condolences to you Pat.
  • Richard's son was married two weeks ago.  A lovely perfect family wedding was celebrated outdoors.
  • It was noted that members may want to wear masks at the barbecue-a personal decision.
  • There were no birthdays today.
  • We are saddened to learn of the passing of Beulah Stinson, wife of the late Glen Stinson, former member of Eastview and former PDG of District 5550.  Glen and Beulah were a beloved couple of Eastview.  Many of us will remember trips organized by Glen & Beulah to an International Rotary Convention somewhere in the world.  We remember them fondly and offer condolences to family.
FELLOWSHIP HIGHLIGHTS
Enjoy the Eastview fellowship this week--golf and the Past Presidents' barbecue.

Philosopher's Corner

"One of the most fascinating things about golf is how it reflects the cycle of life.  No matter what you shoot--the next day you have to go back to the first tee and begin all over again and make yourself into something"
                          Peter Jacobsen
