TWO PART PROGRAM:
MEMBER INDUCTION - JEANNE ALEXANDER & EGHOSA & JAYNA AMADASUN
&
HONOURING THE BUFFALO - JUDITH SILVERTHORNE!

    Regina Eastview's November 2022 second Hybrid meeting brought 18 people into the Delta and 7 individuals joined by via ZOOM for a really busy 2-Part program. President Jeff Barber was on an elevated platform, which was somewhat contrary to his inclusivity approach and to get to his perch, folks had to climb 3 steps (but who was counting). O' Canada was led by Allen Hillsden, Land Acknowledgement was extended by President Jeff, who also expressed appreciation for services provided by Greeter Peter Peters, 50/50 Ticket GURU Ron Okumura, Front Desk Comptroller Doreen Pankewich - we all felt good.
    President Jeff called on Jeanne Alexander to introduce our Guest Speaker, Judith Silverthorne. In her comments Jeanne noted the love of nature, culture, and history inspire Judith's writing and help shape her international award winning books. She is the author of several children's novels. She has also written several hundred articles and columns for newspapers and magazines and worked as a journalist, freelance writer, editor, evaluator, researcher, curator, book reviewer, scriptwriter, television documentary producer and arts administrator. She has presented hundreds of readings and writing workshops at libraries, schools and other educational institutions and given presentations at conferences and to organizations. She currently is a freelance writer, editor, presenter, and instructor and is producing documentaries for television.
    In her introductory comments Judith Silverthorne noted that Honouring the Buffalo is a picture book collaboration between Raymond Lavallee, herself and Mike Keepness the picture and artistic arm of the collaborators. The credit for this book, Judith says  belongs to Raymond Lavallee, a "Wisdom Keeper and Cree Storyteller", who asked Judith to help him, "write the oral stories in book form", to preserve them. The story is written as if a wise grandfather is telling the story to his grandson. “A long time ago Our People came from the Northern Woodlands to the Great Plains looking for food,” Grandfather said. “They saw that the Buffalo lived in harmony with Mother Earth the same as Our People did.”
    "Through the Creator, Buffalo gave themselves as a gift for the sustenance and survival of the Plains Cree people.  This largest land animal in North America once thundered across the Great Plains  in numbers of 30 to 50 million. They provided shelter, food, clothing, tools, hunting gear, ceremonial objects, and many other necessities for those who lived on the Plains."
    But by 1889, just over a thousand buffalo remained, and the lives of the Plains Cree people changed. Buffalo are honoured to this day, a reminder of life in harmony that was once lived. This book tells the story of how Buffalo came to share themselves so freely. Honouring the Buffalo – includes study guide, audio recordings in English, French and Plains Cree (y dialect), plus other useful links, excerpts, and how the story came to be. The English/Cree version was published in 2015. The French/Cree translation was published in 2016. The German/Cree version was published in 2019.
Writer & Author Judith Silverthorne
Judith detailed a host of awards received by the book, which is used as a teaching tool across the Province and in other Canadian jurisdictions. It is Raymond Lavallee’s story and is told in a way that Cree peoples understand and appreciate. While the book's initial search for a publisher was not inspiring, once it was published, it caught the attention of the local and international communities and is now in its third printing.
Thank you Judith Silverthorne for your involvement in the writing of this story and for helping to translate oral history into an appreciated and understandable language.
ShelterBoxes being distributed
SHELTERBOX AND ROTARY INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION:
THANK YOU REGINA EASTVIEW
In her expression of appreciation to Regina Eastview for our Club's donation to ShelterBox Canada, Stephanie Christiansen noted the following:
    "Your Club’s support of ShelterBox Canada has made a life-changing impact around the world. Thanks to your Club, families will receive the shelter, essential aid, and technical assistance needed to rebuild their lives after disaster and conflict.
    Last year, ShelterBox was able to provide over 143,000 people with emergency aid thanks to our generous supporters. Together, we're not only changing lives -- we're saving lives.
    Your Club's donation of $1,200.00 will help empower families with not only shelter but with the ability to recover. By providing shelter aid and the training needed to rebuild, families can restore normalcy to their lives, communities can work to recover together, and families can even return to work or school.
    We are proud to be Rotary International's Project Partner, further strengthening a global circle of friendship. We also believe in being people of action. At ShelterBox, we are impatient to see no family left without shelter after disaster. Thank you for joining us in our mission and helping ensure we are always prepared to help when the unthinkable happens.
     If you have any questions about your donation or about our responses, please do not hesitate to call me at our office at 647-352-1930.
     Kind Regards, Stephanie Christensen
     Executive Director"

FELLOWSHIP HIGHLIGHTS
  • Pat Dell got the Sergeant role nod today and she made it worthy the while;
  • Her question was, "What did we do this past weekend 15 years ago"?;
  • Pretty challenging question for our "aging" population, and while some suggested our Adventures in Agriculture program, Pat was looking specifically for our Club's "running the bar" - it was a "beer slinging" frenzy for sure;
  • No Rotary pin, or name tag was costly - regardless if you were in the room or on ZOOM;
  • Peter Peters was happy to tell the Club of ShelterBox Canada's appreciation for our Club's Donation (noted above) - remember Giving Tuesday;
  • Jayna Amadasun was proud to tell us that 4 years ago yesterday (November 23), she became a Canadian Citizen - but there was more;
  • Jayna also told us that she has just completed her Manual 7 Week "Passion and Purpose" Journal which is being published and should be available on Amazon in December;
  • Peter Neufeldt told us that Gord and Deb LeMaistre, Ripple Effect Program Coordinators have just returned from a 2 1/2 week exciting and fruitful visit to Guatemala viewing projects that have continued over the 2 years of COVID forced absence from Guatemala;
  • New initiatives were explored and exciting possibilities are on the drawing board for the coming year;
  • President Jeff was pleased to tell us that he went for his physical, where he was advised that he is "getting older" - he was pleased to be able to convey this fact to the assembled masses as it was a significant highlight;
  • Wonderful day of Rotary - thank you all - see you next week on ZOOM.
