UNITED WAY REGINA!

    President Jean-Marc was pleased to introduce his friend and our Club's Guest Speaker, Cindy Kobayashi. This is what we learned about our guest: For two decades Cindy Kobayashi has dedicated her life to social change, working in the non-profit sector for organizations such as Kids Help Phone, Habitat for Humanity and Mother Teresa Middle School.  She is an Independent Consultant specializing in government relations, fund development, social purpose, social finance, as well as measuring and communicating impact. Cindy is currently serving United Way Regina as the Consulting Director of Advancement working in several capacities, including government relations, project management of data and technology enhancement of 211 Saskatchewan, poverty reduction, fund development, and leading the scaling out of the Social Purpose Institute at United Way.  Her work allows the opportunity to find innovative solutions and work collaboratively with public, private, and non-profit sectors to address complex social issues.
    Cindy Kobayashi used power point slides to expand on how those various roles are played out in her work with Regina's United Way. As a member of the Regina Public Library Board, Cindy and her involvement at an operational level as a volunteer, has a clear understanding of, and appreciation for, seeing and measuring impact of the service provided. The connection with 211 Saskatchewan, “offers a database of over 6,000 community, social, non-clinical health and government services across the province". As an example, there is a Portal where services are identified for citizens experiencing violence and abuse.
    Major local issues for the United Way include childhood success, food security and mental health. Cindy's slide quoted Nelson Mandela's prophetic observation, "Education is the most powerful weapon which we can use to change the world" - is consistent with Rotary's seven areas of focus and certainly with Regina Eastview's past and current activities. The work of United Way and its partners through the Campaign for Grade Level Reading is a community wide approach and addresses 4 key areas - School Readiness; Attendance Matters; Access to Books; and, Summer Slide. Regina's Schools must cater to a broad range of reading material as the communities have multi-lingual children. Cindy highlighted the value of "The Vello One on One Volunteer Ready Program", which has demonstrated, "71.4% of student participants improved their reading level". The annual Dr. Seuss Day is a particular highlight for students (and readers alike).
    The Regina United Way now hosts the Regina Region Family Literacy Hub, which is based on the premise that literacy is a family matter and parental involvement is critical. Access to books is key, and as a result connection with the Regina Public Library obvious.
Cindy Kobayashi
Cindy Kobayaski, for some of us, you introduced a new and exciting understanding of the United Way, a practical addition to the philanthropic vision of some.
    Thank you, Cindy, for the presentation and more importantly for the multi-dimensional leadership role you play in Regina and beyond.

The Family of Rotary

  • As has become his custom, President Jean-Marc called the meeting to order, and as a first item of business he acknowledged that the land on which we meet is the traditional territory of Indigenous people, now known as Treaty 4;
  • He then called for a moment of silence to reflect on the grief and anguish we all experience in the wake of the finding of the burial site of 215 children who attended the Kamloops Residential School;
  • After all, "We are all Treaty People".
  • Adam Krammer, a member of the RC of Regina Oskaya, is completing his 2nd year as President of his Club. After stick-handling Oskaya through these 24 months, which included 15 ½ months of  “the pandemic”, this technology astute young Rotarian has joined the District 5550 Learning and Development Team.
  • CONGRATULATIONS, Adam Krammer!

FELLOWSHIP HIGHLIGHTS

  • We were all excited with Jeff Barber that the Regina Public Library is again open;
  • But Jeff did not stop here. We learned on their initial visit to the family cabin they arrived to find a "busted water line" in the top floor allowed water to descend to all lower floors, bringing with it the respect ceilings;
  • As a result of the blessings of Insurance and available trades people, the Barber's maybe able to access their now renovated cabin in July 2021;
  • President Jean-Marc was pumped with Montreal "thumping" the "Leafs" and in his enthusiasm donated $20.00;
  • Because he talked himself into such a frenzy, J-M donated a further $20.00, in anticipation of the "butt kicking" Montreal will be handing the "Jets" - he stopped at $40.00, but added the following;
  • The two Nadeau daughters have an apartment in Winnipeg, arranged for September 2021, leaving Mom and Dad as "empty nesters" - which got a "that's OK";
  • Ann Grahame advised that she received her second shot so was feeling relieved;
  • Ann's announcement was followed by "me to" from the Carlsons, Butlers, Pankewichs, and Peters;
  • Not to worry youngsters, your turn will come;
  • Hope to see you all next week.
