"REGINA" WITH MAYOR SANDRA MASTERS!

President Jean-Marc was delighted to have the opportunity to introduce our Guest Speaker, Mayor Sandra Masters and this is what we learned.
Mayor Masters is the City of Regina’s 35th Mayor and first elected woman Mayor.
Proudly Saskatchewan, Mayor Masters grew up on the prairies and has called Regina home for more than 20 years.  Her professional career has included agricultural financing, commercial real estate and banking.
Energetic and passionate about Regina’s future, Mayor Masters is guided by a desire for an economically vibrant community that is inclusive, accessible, sustainable and safe!
In her presentation Mayor Masters demonstrated that her introduction was not an exaggeration. For the next 35 plus minutes Sandra Masters inspired us with her enthusiasm, clarity, vision and passion. Her interest is not restricted to the Regina community, but extends to matters effecting our well-being at the Provincial and National levels. Her interaction with neighbouring communities in the Moose Jaw to White Butte "corridor," focuses on how to grow together for our common benefit. The Mayor touched on the learning opportunity she is being provided through interaction with First Nation leaders in discussing matters related to Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls.
Environmental Sustainability is an important topic as the City strategizes the 3 decade transition to the desired new world of zero emissions. Mayor Masters shared her enthusiasm for working with the University of Regina to a collaboration which will see Regina as a University City. This collaboration will enhance the City of Regina, once the important and expanding areas of research going on at the U of R are better understood and "marketed" across the country and beyond.
Mayor Masters spoke about the recent announcement of Canola Crushing facilities being planned for the southern part of the Province and its impact on expanding the "added value" of the province's agricultural commodities. The fact that this development will contribute to the province's 'clean fuel' agenda will be important locally, but also for the export market.
In her presentation she frequently referred to the importance of relationship building. Whether it was in reference to our neighbouring Towns and Cities, the U of R, First Nation Communities, Rural Municipalities, etc., "relationship" was front and centre.
Sandra Masters strikes me as a builder, and building begins with creating a team with a common vision, and leading the team with energy and enthusiasm. I would like to think that the Regina citizenery are excited about keeping up with our Mayor.

Mayor Sandra Masters, thank you for your presentation and commitment to Regina.
Mayor Sandra Masters

On April 22, 2021 Gary Dawyduk, RC of Winnipeg and Rob Campbell, RC of Hillcrest (South Africa) shared with us their partnership in supporting the establishment of the 1000 Survival Garden Project. Gathering water is a core need carried out by women and young girls who use buckets to carry water on their heads. Over time this labour-intensive task results in debilitating physical problems. Often this involves walking great distances to a water source, disrupting girls from attending school and robbing time women could better spend on family-building activities.

The Hippo Roller, a water transfer marvel, allows for delivering water from source to home and garden by significantly reducing the harmful effects. By adding hand tools, seeds and everything necessary for creating a garden to the Hippo Roller, a family or community has the components for survival and much more.

Regina Eastview is donating $1,000.00 to this project, which purchases 4 Hippo Roller Kits ($250.00 each). The RC of Winnipeg will match this donation so this means there are now 8 more families that will not only survive, but thrive. Club Directors agreed that members of the Club should be invited to contribute to this project. Maybe we could generate donations to purchase 2 additional Kits. Please send your donations to the Treasurer by June 15, 2021 and you will be included in our Club and Member donation to this critical international initiative.

Donations of $20 and greater are entitled to a tax-deductible receipt from RC Winnipeg;

your full mailing address is required, although receipts may be sent by e-mail when requested.

TODAY'S WISDOM

In Pat Dell’s “Wisdom” today, author Dr. Ira Byock, credited his prophetic observation to the following interaction between anthropologist Margaret Mead and one of her students. PHP

"Years ago, anthropologist Margaret Mead was asked by a student what she considered to be the first sign of civilization in a culture. The student expected Mead to talk about fishhooks or clay pots or grinding stones.
But no. Mead said that the first sign of civilization in an ancient culture was a femur (thighbone) that had been broken and then healed. Mead explained that in the animal kingdom, if you break your leg, you die. You cannot run from danger, get to the river for a drink or hunt for food. You are meat for prowling beasts. No animal survives a broken leg long enough for the bone to heal.
A broken femur that has healed is evidence that someone has taken time to stay with the one who fell, has bound up the wound, has carried the person to safety and has tended the person through recovery. Helping someone else through difficulty is where civilization starts, Mead said."
The Family of Rotary
We learned today of John Solilo's passing. John was a loved and appreciated 45 year member of Regina Eastview joining the club in 1969. His photography skills were important to the Club as was his commitment to the Club's Vocational Service. A big supporter of women in Rotary, John was committed to Rotary's social events because it was an opportunity to bring Dorothy to a Rotary event. Rest well, John - it was good to walk with you.
