President Jayna Amadasun called us to order at 12:02 welcomed members and Guests at the Delta and the persons who choose to participate in Regina Eastview's meeting via ZOOM. Allen Hillsden was invited to lead us in the singing of our National Anthem, which was followed by Peter Peters sharing in a prayer of thankfulness for the gifts of sustenance and fellowship in this place where peace is an appreciated blessing. President Jayna reminded us of our obligation to the peoples who welcomed us to this land we know as Canada and that we are all Treaty people. Our guests were introduced by their hosts and once we knew who was in the room, the President asked Tania Woroby to share the letter with the Club recently received from Sathi Atker, a Mother Teacher, our Club sponsors through the Amarok Society in a Bangladesh City slum. Sathi speaks about the difference she has experienced in her life as an influencer in her home, community and in the lives of the 5 children she now teaches in her community. Supporting the Amarok Society is one of the international service projects Regina Eastview supports, and Tania coordinates our activity in this project. Following acknowledgement of Birthdays and Anniversaries, the President invited the sharing of personal highlights (for a 'happy dollar'), and concluded by detailing the orderly access to the Buffet table.
Following dinner, President Jayna introduced our Guest Speaker Kaylea Lax, a partner in the Sheppard Braun Muma law firm. Her practice focuses largely in the areas of Estate Planning, Estate Administration, and residential Real Estate. Our guest was born and raised in Regina and as a child her family was host to many Rotary exchange students. Kaylea, a Mom, is committed to her community, offering her time to volunteer programs and various community boards. She is a Paul Harris Fellow and Past President of the Rotary Club of Regina.
In her presentation Kaylea highlighted key components of Wills and Estates and explained the connections between these two aspects and how to minimize the challenges and delays associated with distribution of wealth and value following ones death. Distributed at the tables and circulated subsequently by Jayna was a nine page Will Information Sheet which provided personal, spousal, children, Executer, beneficiary and general detail. It then delved into components of a person’s estate, listing a summary of assets including personal effects such as boats, automobiles, etc., other properties (farm land, machinery, cattle grain, etc.
We learned about the value of having a detailed estate plan and its connection to one's last will and testament; we learned about Probate and its various components, and the importance of having things 'in order' to minimize or eliminate associate probate fees; we learned about an Executor of the will and the role this person serves in moving the details of a Will through to an appreciated and desired conclusion.
