RYLA WITH ALUEL MALEK!

    At 12:25 P.M. President Jeff Barber woke those drifting off to sleep, by tapping the bell gently with the gavel, Having accomplished this important step, he welcomed all (15 on site and 6 on ZOOM) and drew attention to our guests identified below the photo. Allen Hillsden was called on to lead those assembled in O' Canada following which President Jeff shared our Club's Land Acknowledgement Statement. There were Birthdays to acknowledge but this was deferred until the Celebrants were present. In the 50/50 draw Peter Peters by a stroke of luck found his ticket in the "ticket cup", and that is when his luck ran out as his deft fingers came up with a blue marble. Details of John Van Koll's Sergeant-At-Arms Report are detailed below.
    Peter Neufeldt was invited to introduce our Guest Speaker, Aluel Malek. We learned this young lady is a Grade 12 student at Miller Comprehensive High School and is applying to the U of R. Aluel and her family came to Canada, and specifically Regina from a Refugee Camp in South Sudan, sponsored by Regina's Grace Mennonite Church. Regina Eastview selected Aluel to participate in RI District 5550 Rotary Youth Leadership Awards 2022. Peter touched on RYLA Goals and the program's Curriculum which combine to benefit participants developing their leadership skills and self-confidence by exposing them to community leaders and mentors. In the process it inspires new ideas for service, increases support of projects and helps develop future potential members. He summarized RYLA as, "...a leadership development program for young people who want to learn new skills, build confidence, and have fun. In District 5550 RYL involves weeklong camps - one for senior students and one for junior students."
    Aluel shared with us some aspects of her RYLA experience which were in essence a reflection of RYLA's focus. She spoke about how she and her fellow students arrived as somewhat "alone" individuals and learned that family is not reserved to "blood". Family can be expanded to include persons which surround one when there is a commonness of purpose and intent. The students in her group became part of her family and that expanded to include all the students as they played Volleyball, canoed or stay around a table to eat spaghetti with knives, forks or spoons. The family bond was strengthened when they awakened in the middle of the night and were challenged with difficult questions and searched for a hidden counselor in the dark.
    They bounded as a group around campfires, roasting wieners and marshmallows and worked together as group to express what was good, enjoyable and helpful about RYLA. On a personal side, to list the things they are passionate about when it comes to the environment was a unique experience and required a look inside themselves which was helped by the encouragement of others. When thinking about the environment, the ShelterBox presentation highlighted by the set up tent brought the challenge created by disasters and reminded the students about the importance of looking after "the world". Aluel noted that evening movies helped to relax this enthusiastic family before going to bed.
    Aluel Malek thank you for a great presentation. We are delighted you and your RYLA family are leading us into tomorrow. You have our best wishes as you continue to enhance your leadership skills. We are proud of you!

EARTHQUAKE UPDATES:
ONE MONTH LATER
(This from ShelterBox Yesterday - PHP)

     One month ago, Turkiye  and Syria were struck by back to back massive earthquakes and hundreds of aftershocks. ShelterBox has been working to support affected people ever since.
    Tents have already arrived in Turkiye and have been distributed to those most in need. Now, ShelterBox teams are working alongside Rotary to provide additional tents as well as blankets, mattresses, stoves, hygiene kits and more.
Shelter Box and Rotary On The Ground
This response is incredibly complicated, and the destruction is much worse than one could imagine. But our teams in Gaziantep are working hard to ensure that people will have the shelter and supports they need to recover from this disaster. It is estimated that people will be surviving in tents and other emergency shelter for at least eight months.

FELLOWSHIP HIGHLIGHTS
  • "Tip of the Hat!" to PDG Peter Neufeldt and his Rotary Colleagues from Melfort for travelling to Humboldt to make this presentation - well done;
  • Shreedhar Jachak is commended for searching out Maya Angelou's wise words for today;
  • Sergeant-At-Arms John Van Koll back from 3 weeks in Mexico, was primed to make money for the Club - missing name tags is always a sure bet and so it was today - pay up folks;
  • Sergeant John immediately felt bad and offered up $5.00 for "being away for some time" - I thought he allowed himself off fairly easy - however, he is the Sergeant;
  • New member Eghosa Amadasun stood and made a donation in recognition of International Women’s Day on March 8th and appreciation for his own mother and all the women who have impacted and who impact us for good every day;
  • The never aging Doug Mortin, told us it is surprizing to him that their son, Michael, turned 51 today - it is the time to grasp Maya Angelou's wise thought;
  • Enjoy the week, everyone - be safe - see you next week on ZOOM.

Philosopher's Corner

“If you must look back, do so forgivingly.
If you must look forward, do so prayerfully.
However, the wisest thing you can do is be present in the present gratefully.”
                                       Maya Angelou
