AMAROK SOCIETY:                                EDUCATING MOTHERS - BUILDING COMMUNITY!

President Jean-Marc called on Ann Grahame to introduce our guest speaker, Gabriel Munro, whose parents founded the Amarok Society.  From the time of Amarok's inception some 15 years ago, Gabriel Munro has actively contributed to the activities of the organization. This work has ranged from teaching mothers in Bangladesh, to arranging international speaking tours and leading communications for the Amarok Society in Canada. Outside of his work for Amarok Society, Gabriel is also a published writer, composer, and has a diploma in Radio Broadcasting.
In his opening remarks, Gabriel Munro made an important "fund raising" observation. When he referred to the things "we" are doing, Gabriel invited us to understand this most importantly included individuals and groups who contributed to the work. "This is a partnership" and it functions because of the resources received. Amarok Society goes into some of the most desperately poor urban slums mainly in Bangladesh and Pakistan. It is here Amarok Society effects miraculous changes in the lives of thousands of children.
On Amarok's arrival at a slum, it is not a community, but rather a collection of desperate people who in many instances have moved in from the country to find work in the city. Amarok's goal is to teach children and they do this by teaching uneducated mothers how to read and write, and then they teach the mothers to be neighbourhood teachers – educating their own and the neighbours’ children in their homes, with astonishing result. The "taught" mothers become enthusiastic about their new "lease on life" and in the process have become friends which leads to the foundation for a "community". A learned community which recognizes the strength of a united front which has the potential to impact, for good, the families who live in what is now an expanding "community". Currently because of the impact of COVID the challenges facing families relates largely to food security. However, education has made a difference in slums touched by Amarok because now there is a community; mothers know where and how to get information; and, they have the courage to stand up to landlords, less than honest police, and are able to deal with justice related issues.
"Amarok Society defeats ignorance with the most powerful force known to man: WOMAN"
Gabriel helped us appreciate how the education of Mothers has in and of itself had a positive impact in the lives of women and the culture in which they live. Mothers teaching neighbourhood children is a beginning to the process of "giving the world to the child". This gift in turn gives the "child to the world".
Having used a number of touching stories of children learning and surviving in a slum environment, Gabriel concluded his presentation with the observation about a young lady who was now in high school and would be headed for University, "Her life can, and will belong to her".
Gabriel Munro, we were honoured by your presence, thankful for your eye opening presentation, and touched by the dedication of the Amarok Society for you truly, “.. go where no one else goes, to do what no one else does.
Gabriel Munro
