Today's Regina Eastview's guest speaker was Sheila Wignes-Paton, Executive Director of Phoenix Residential Society in Regina, who shared with us the types of services and support they provide to their clients. Functioning under a Mission, "To provide recovery oriented services that foster empowerment, promote hope, and build connectedness in the community"; the Society is focused on a Vision of, "Strengthening Community by Supporting Recovery".
"Phoenix Residential Society is a charitable non-profit community based health care organization providing psychosocial (psychiatric) rehabilitation services to persons in the Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region with psychiatric disorders, concurrent disorders (psychiatric & substance abuse), persons with acquired brain injury (ABI) and other cognitive disabilities."
Sheila Wignes-Paton shares the Phoenix Resiential Society StoryChange
The Society's 30 full time, along with a supportive group of part time staff, work to oversee the services provided to over 170 clients; clients that present with a broad spectrum of Psychiatric and other health needs. Clients are assisted with skills of daily living; they learn problem solving skills; how to manage their medication; and, basically assist with what ever is required.
A big supporter of Regina's "Housing First Program", Phoenix Residential Society understands that housing is critical in making a difference in the lives of homeless persons. Housing provides a "hand up" and is a major step in restoring the dignity of an individual, who, until this need is met, is consumed with: "Where will I sleep? What will I eat? How can I stay healthy? How do I avoid the police?"
As one client expressed, "I am like a Phoenix - I arose from the ashes!"
