FREE THE GIRLS!

    Acting President Pat invited Rotarian Shannon Windrim to introduce our Guest Speaker, Pam Gumns. From Shannon we learned that Pam Gumns is Free The Girls, Director of Strategic Partnerships. Free The Girls (FTG) provides economic empowerment to survivors of sex trafficking. In her current role she works with brands, retailers, and lingerie companies as well as clubs, civic groups, church and faith- based partners and all official FTG drop-off locations. Through the donation of new and returned inventory from businesses and gently used bras from individuals, FTG is able to provide inventory for a trafficking survivor’s micro enterprise. To date over 1.5 million+ bras have been collected! Pam came to share, "the Free The Girls story, their model, and ways to be involved."
    Pam Gumns told us FTG has an 11 year history and was intiated in Mozambique. It was created as part of the response to the question of what are sex workers, "being recused to". It is an international 501  non-profit organization devoted to coming together with sex trafficking survivors with a road to true freedom. CNN aired a 30 minute documentary in February 2013 which captured the imagination of individuals and organizations on how these struggling survivors could become self sufficient individuals through the sale of new and/or slightly used bras which have been donated largely from the US and Canada.
    Using power point slides Pam showed how girls are enslaved and the effort to rescue these children from this life style is ever so challenging. She joined the organization as a volunteer, was so inspired with the success of the FTG organization, that she joined and has become a strong advocate working on a meaningful way of rescuing individuals into a rewarding life altering business. FTG functions in Mozambique, Uganda, Costa Rica and El Salvador.
    It is estimated that there are 41 million people in the world caught in the horror of being sex workers. This "business" generates 150 billion $ per year. Pam noted there are three steps (3 "R's") required to rescue individuals from this life and are pillars in victim service work - Rescue; Rehabilitaion; and, Reintegration. Statistics indicate that up to 80% of rescued trafficking survivor will be re-exploited due to lack of sustainable job opportunities. FTG plays a role in the Reintegration  component of this process. To appreciate the work they do, please go to the top of this page and, "click to watch".
    Pam Gumns, thank you for what you do to create a better place for some of the most vulnarable in our society.

The Family of Rotary
Leonard Michael Antymniuk
  • We were saddened to learn of the passing of our former member Leonard Antymniuk. A moment of silence was held as we honoured his walk with our Rotary Club. We appreciated Len's musical talent and how he used these gifts in our Club from 1983 to 2004 - these were the piano accordion days. Thank you Leonard for your cheerful encouragement;
  • We learned that Father Lorne Crozon, a member of the RC of Regina Oskaya, was admitted to Regina General Hospital's ICU last week, but is now out of ICU but remains in the General - your thoughts, prayers and good wishes are appreciated;
  • Former Eastviewian John and Dorothy Solilo recently celebrated their 75th Wedding Anniversary - loud CONGRATULATIONS, from Regina Eastview.

  • The Sergeat-At-Arms determined that if you have not gone for a walk during these beautiful days it would cost $2.00, and if there is not a Rotary pin on your person, or at least be adorned with attire which contains the Rotary logo, this too was a $2.00 fine;
  • Allen Hillsden was invited to auction off the single unclaimed Valentine GALA Silent Auction Item. Cory Daly was the successful bidder and takes home the prize for $50.00;

Philosopher's Corner

Selected Commandments   for Seniors
- Talk to yourself. There are times you need expert advice.
- “In Style” are the clothes that still fit.
- The biggest lie you tell yourself is, “I don’t need to write that down. I’ll remember it.”
 - “On time” is when you get there.
- It would be wonderful if we could put ourselves in the dryer for ten minutes, then come out wrinkle-free and three sizes smaller.
- You notice people your age are so much older than you.
- Growing old should have taken longer.
And one more:
- "One for the road" means going to the bathroom before you leave the house!
