WILLS TRUSTS & ESTATE PLANNING!

President Jack introduced our Guest Speaker, a member of the RC of Regina Eastview, Cory Daly, whose professional career is financial planning. While his presentation was on wills, trusts and estate planning, Cory was quick to advise us that this was not a legal presentation, that he was not a lawyer and his clear counsel was, one should get a lawyer to draw up one's will. In view of the current coronavirus our consciousness to our mortality has been brought more real. Hence, creating and/or updating a will is most timely, as dying without this being in place can leave the grieving family lost and frustrated. Maintaining a current "Last Will and Testament" will ensure, to the best degree possible, that there is clarity in how you want your worldly possessions distributed. Cory shared with us the challenges faced if death occurs and there is no will (Intestate Death); or there is a "Holographic Will", one that is written entirely in the handwriting of the "testor" and signed by the individual. He advocated for neither of these processes. Never take a chance on writing your own will, always use a lawyer.
Cory Daly Following Induction into Regina Istview on October 3, 2019
In will and estate planning, it is critical to consider what we want to have happen when we are not able to adequately or appropriately act for ourselves. We must consider the "appointment/selection" of a Power of Attorney. A person who has "written authorization to represent or act on another's behalf in private affairs, business, or some other legal matter. The person authorizing the other to act is the principal, grantor, or donor."
In addition, an advance healthcare directive, also known as living will, personal directive, advance directive, medical directive or advance decision, is a "legal document in which a person specifies what actions should be taken for their health if they are no longer able to make decisions for themselves, because of illness or incapacity".
In concluding his remarks, Cory reminded his audience, that while taking these actions is important, is is equally important to share this information with your spouse and children, so they are aware of your expressed wishes.
Thank you Cory.

Philosopher's Corner

"If every morning you can find a reason to say “Yes, it’s going to be a beautiful day”;
And if every day, you have reason to say “Yes, it is a beautiful day”;
And every night you find a reason to say. “Yes it was a beautiful day”;
Then one day, you will look back and easily say “Yes , --- it was a beautiful life."
