PDG PETER PETERS AND POLIO PLUS

Our speaker today was PDG Peter Peters, Chair of the International Services Committee, assisted by Greg McNamara, Rotary Foundation Chair, speaking about the Polio Plus Program in recognition of October 24 being World Polio Day. Peter noted important polio facts: Polio mainly affects children under age 5. Only 3 countries remain endemic--Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Nigeria. Rotary and its partners have immunized 2.5 billion children worldwide. There have been no polio cases in Canada since 1977.  Partners include UNICEF, US Centers for Disease Control, WHO, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Governments of the world.
In 1985 Rotary International and its partners planned to eradicate polio by its 100th birthday in 2005.  In 1988 there were 350,000 cases of polio annually. In 2018 there were only 33 cases.  "People have given their lives for this program and we want to insure their dedication does not chill our desire to finalize the gift of a polio free world to the children of the world", said Peter.

FELLOWSHIP HIGHLIGHTS
Here are today's highlights of fellowship
  • Sgt. Pat Dell fined two people for not registering for today's meeting.  She also fined Tanya for mentioning the word 'snow'.
  • Peter noted in his presentation that the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will match donations to Polio Plus 2:1.
  • Donation by our members to the Polio Plus Program was a definite highlight.  Greg also indicated he donates regularly to Polio Plus. In addition to the Verma's generosity, others donated to the program. Thank you members.  $850 donations results in $2550 and $2000 results in $6000 giving a total donation to Polio Plus today of $8550 with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation contribution.
  • Rotary's commitment to Polio Plus in 1985 was $120 million.  They raised $246 million.  Eastview raised $51,000.
