IGNITE--THE ADULT LEARNING CORPORATION WITH CEO, DELLICE SAXBY!

Dellice Saxby became the CEO of Ignite in September, 2020.  She has been a long time educator and researcher living in Yellowgrass prior to, moving to Regina. She has 6 year old twins so knows all about juggling time and priorities.
Ignite has a 30 year history in Regina, known at first as the Multicultural Enterprise, then the Regina Adult Learning Center and then in 2012 as Ignite.
"Our mission is to empower people to reach their employment, education, and personal goals. We value all forms of diversity and we strive to create a safe and comfortable learning space for everyone."  The Center has expanded to include online and blended learning; differentiated education streams so that students can learn at their level; expanded community network and access to resources; a community connections program which involves volunteers in aspects of the learning process; educational psychological assessments for those who need one; an indigenous cultural program.
The Indigenous The cultural program undergoes continuous design by a special Indigenous Advisory Committee and provides opportunities for students to learn about indigenous teachings and participate in various events.  The goal is to hire a full time indigenous support professional in 2022.
Dellice Saxby, CEO of Ignite
Out of 40 students about 80% finish the program. Of the 20% many return later and finish.  77% of regular students finish Grade 12 in the province. Only about 44% of Indigenous students finish Grade 12.  Organizations like Ignite are working to change those numbers. With their excellent programs and highly trained and committed staff they will do so.  Thank you Dellice for enlightening the club about your organization.
Laurence Vigrass
A moment of silence was held in memory of Laurence Vigrass, a long time former member of Regina Eastview.  Members recalled his many contributions to Eastview as President, his involvement with all of the student programs, particularly in later years with the Ambassadorial Scholar program.  Glenna and Laurence supported all the events with enthusiasm.  Laurence was a geologist and his profession took him to many places in the world.  He was a long time professor at the University of Regina.  Laurence will be missed by family and friends. A man who practised 'Service above Self' on a daily basis. A service of remembrance will be held at the Library at Katepwa Beach, 41 Elm Street on Friday, November 12 at 11 am.

A TRIBUTE TO THE REGINA GENERAL HOSPITAL STAFF AND THE SASK HEALTH AUTHORITY
As some of you know I spent a number of days recently in the Regina General Hospital admitted with a severe asthma attack.  The kindness, care, knowledge of every staff member was outstanding. Following are some of the details of my experience—some of the humor you see in these situations, and the personal enrichment of my time there.
To start with where do they find these handsome, caring young paramedics?  Whose sons and grandsons are they?  My daughters’ comments: “Oh Mother!”
The Hospital prepared a very nice supper of turkey, dressing and all the trimmings along with pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving.  Couldn’t eat any of it!   What a travesty. Certifies me for two Christmas dinners!  My daughters’ comments: ‘I hope she gets over missing the turkey dinner.’
Two of my room mates were indigenous men 1 about my age.  Ray and I enjoyed watching STARS landing right beside and above us.  How fascinating is that.  There is somebody who is having a worse day than you are. Ray was a retired plumber with diabetes and infection and deterioration meant he could no longer work.  This bothered him.  He said the new plumbers don’t know what we know.   We shared stories.
Shawn was a 45-year old man from a reserve near Broadview.  Shawn under the super care soon started to improve.  My impression was that Shawn had not had the benefit of strong support.  He told me he was going to change his attitude because he really wanted to keep his job at the ski hill, that he just had to work.  I said you can do it, Shawn, there are all kinds of professional people that would love to help you.
I think of Shawn and Ray often.  I hope their health improves and they can lead normal healthy lives.  We had good visits.  I realized how fortunate I was in all that life had put in front of me for the taking.  Stay well Shawn and Ray.    Gail Bradley

November is Rotary Foundation Month--a special presentation on the Foundation is being arranged for Eastview early in 2022.  Please remember the Foundation as you consider your gifts to Rotary in the coming year.
FELLOWSHIP HIGHLIGHTS
  • Richard Schwan is our fabulous Sergeant at Arms.  He is determined to educate us about Rotary and today also the City of Regina. He has his work cut out for him.  Past President Jean-Marc has a complicated relationship with the Sergeant. His tab of infractions and credits is hard to follow but obviously the Sergeant sees work to be done with JM.
  • Vic attempted to correct the Sergeant on one of his questions.  Not a good idea, Vic, the Sergeant keeps records of his exact questions.
  • President Pat was also on the hit list for changing the order of the meeting without notifying the Sergeant.
  • There was much happiness that people were willing to pay for: Pat Dell had been to Saskatoon with girl friends to a Van Gogh exhibition; Clarence reported his granddaughter had been offered her first job--doesn't that warm a grandfather's heart!  Shannon has been to Banff to a niece's wedding;, Doreen remembered joining Rotary the year Laurence Vigrass was President.  She was secretary and reflected on how much she has learned about Rotary in the past years.  Jean-Marc just continues to bravely pay fines levied by the Sergeant hoping some day he will be on Sgt. Richard's good side.  You can do it Jean-Marc.
  • Until next time, enjoy these last lovely days of fall.

"Growth is good for you. It allows you to explore the infinite opportunities that are available to you, at any given moment. Don’t be afraid to take a step into the unknown. You have to keep going, to keep on growing.
