TRANSFORMING FACES!

President Pat Dell invited Donna Parry to introduce today's Guest Speaker, Rachel Winer. Donna noted Rachel Winer is the Marketing & Engagement Manager, with Transforming Faces (TF). This is a Canadian-based charity established in 1999 which provides "comprehensive care for children born with cleft lip and palate". TF is a unique organization in that it partners with local medical teams to ensure that life-changing cleft care is a service that is accessible to and for all.
Rachel shared with us the organization's MISSION, which is to: Equip local teams to provide comprehensive cleft lip and palate care that is accessible for all. Together we are building happier, healthier lives for children and families in Africa, Asia and the Americas and beyond. This provides an important understanding of the breadth of their activity which speaks directly to their focus expressed through their VISION - For children with cleft lip and palate is full, inclusion into their community, so they can pursue their hopes and dreams. With this as a foundation, Rachel noted that in 2020, they served 1261 new patients and provided 20,782 treatments. The total of treatments from inception of the program number in excess of 360,000 treatments. We learned that a cleft is the most common birth defect in the world.
Using Power Point slides, Rachel introduced us to children, in Chile, India and Ethiopia who have benefited from this international partnership which is patterned to the organization's a "Circle of Cleft Care" (CCC). The CCC includes surgery, speech therapy, community engagement, hearing, dental care, orthodontics, parent support, transportation assistance, counselling and newborn nutrition. The CCC also includes Donors, individuals like you and me, who can select this as a personal charity of chose, knowing that 100% of your donation goes directly to the program and the services provided.
Rachel touched on the CCC's three challenges, namely - Access, Stigma and Resources. In Chile during the pandemic, Government lockdown suspended in-person services causing a backlog of appointments. However, with support provided by TF, facilities were upgraded and it was possible to safely meet the increased demand for in-person care. She also introduced us to an infant in India, where the mother choose not to tell her family that her son would be born with a cleft palate because of the stigma. The mom was referred to a TF local partner where she experienced compassionate care - thanks to the support, mother and family finally accepted their new family addition. In Ethiopia, as in other countries, a cleft can be perceived to be a curse, the burden is one that is often carried by the mother. But again, through the work of TF and its commitment to community based partnerships, comprehensive cleft care was transformational.
TF is about doing good with others, for others. It is not just transforming faces, it is about transforming lives.
Thank you, Rachel Winer for sharing the TF story and your passion for this work.

Rotary in Action – Jannine’s Page
The Rotary Foundation is Rotary's one and only charity - and one of the ways the monies raised for it are used is to increase the impact of Rotary service projects with and in our communities in seven key areas of focus. Together these encompass some of the world's most critical and widespread needs.
