STEPHEN MOORGEN--ABOUT HUMAN TRAFFICKING!

President Al opened the meeting with a thank you to Jayna for hosting last week's Eastview meeting. Following the Land Acknowledgement, President Al introduced guest speaker, Stephen Moorgen. Stephen is with the Salvation Army in Saskatoon and is working on the issue of human trafficking. His previous work experience was with law enforcement and today this expertise provides benefit to the task of eliminating human trafficking. Stephen is an educator on the topic and works with various partners. He noted that the Salvation Army has declared 'Fight for Freedom'--Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking Awareness month.
Stephen explained the steps of the Human Trafficker--Act, Means, Purpose. This crime is growing on the prairies. The trafficker gains $346,000 per person--usually a female victim as of 2023 statistics. There are 4 types: forced labour, forced marriage, sexual exploitation, forced organ removal and the Salvation Army adds -- forced consent. 93% of individuals who are trafficked are in Canada and are Canadian children, youth and young women. It is a hidden crime. Ontario is a hub for trafficking particularly near the American border. Many of those experiencing human trafficking have vulnerabilities such as addictions, homelessness, history of sexual abuse, low self esteem, mental illness. Traffickers seek out these individuals to control, manipulate and exploit. The youngest that have been recruited are 13-15 years old and as young as 11-12 on the prairies. Stephen went on to discuss stages in recruitment, where it happens, why they don't leave, how to spot the signs, the indicators, who are the traffickers and what we can do.
This was a fascinating as well as alarming talk but good information for us to know. Thank you Stephen and the Salvation Army for what you are doing to change the situation and educate people. We greatly appreciate to hear of the work that is being done.

CONGRATULATIONS ROTARY RIDERS
Contributed by Rider Doug Mortin:
"This was our 14th annual Ride and the 4th annual Floyd Manz Memorial Ride.
To date, $12,000 has been raised for the Ripple Effect program.
Peter was given the 2020 Corvette from a Dilawri dealership here in Regina.
We rode 400 kilometers on the 17th and will ride 540 kms tomorrow, round trip, delivering the raised funds in exchange for the tax receipts. "

Congratulations to Doug and Peter, the initial organizers of the Ride, on yet another successful event. See photos below contributed by Doug.

And there was more community work by Rotary volunteers this week in the backpack project sponsored by the Salvation Army. The backpacks will make many children happy as they start school. Thanks to the Rotarians and of course always, the Salvation Army.

A ROTARY FOUNDATION MOMENT: This week we heard about Rotary Scholar, Lis Bernhardt, who after completing the program, more education and work experience, went on to work with Rotary in establishing the environment as one of Rotary's areas of focus. She said "I was always impressed with the passion Rotarians have, the fact that they are all over the world and that they want to do good for their communities". Read more at
