KATE DEDERICK AND HER EXPERIENCES IN ADVENTURES IN CITIZENSHIP!

Ann Grahame introduced Kate Dederick as Eastview's representative (and only Saskatchewan representative) to the virtual Adventures in Citizenship program held  in Ottawa this year.  Kate graduated from Grade 12 at Sheldon Williams Collegiate this year.  Kate, during her school year, was active in many activities including choir, volleyball, ultimate frisbee, skiing, photography, yearbook, an attendee at 4 RYLA programs and more.  She plans to study at the U of R in the fall.  Here interest is international relations.
Kate spoke with enthusiasm about her 5 day virtual experience held at the beginning of May this year.  Speakers included the Swiss ambassador to Canada; The Rt. Hon. Joe Clark, former Adventurer and Prime Minister of Canada; Senator Joe Day; Katelyn Adey, a Past Page to the House of Commons; The Hon. Anthony Rota on the role of the Speaker of the House of Commons; a 'Staffer on the Hill'; and the War Veterans' Talk (which Kat indicated was her favorite); Elder Vince and Elaine Kicknosway and their son, Theland; and The Rt. Hon. Paul Martin, former Prime Minister.  Other interesting presentations came from Citizenship Judges Marie Senecal-Tremblay and Suzanne Carriere as well as a citizenship testimony from Mira Dodokah Ahmad.
This was a wonderful presentation from an accomplished student.  Thank you Kate for speaking to us today.  It is rewarding for Rotarians to hear of the positive impact students experience in our Club's programs.

Kate's takeaways from the Adventures in Citizenship program were: "This experience has not only helped me learn more about Canada, but has also provided me friends from all over the country.... and....Learning all the wonderful things about my country makes me proud to be a Canadian and proud to be a part of Rotary." The Family of Rotary

We were saddened to learn of the untimely death of former Eastview member, Cory Daly.  Cory joined Eastview in 2019, just before the pandemic forced Club shutdown and transfer to virtual meetings.  Cory believed in the principles of Rotary and in his short time at Eastview was diligent in his service to the Administration Committee with the task of securing speakers for meetings.  A few weeks before his death he transferred to the R. C. of Regina Oskaya for a different experience.  United Church minister and member of Oskaya, Lorna King officiated at the memorial service.  Our condolences go out to Cory's family.  He will be missed.

FELLOWSHIP HIGHLIGHTS
  • Jeff Barber was the Sergeant at Arms today.  He immediately fined President Pat, even though she did not make a mistake, because, well that is just what you do with a new president.
  • Jeff's intention was to fine any Rotarians who had planned an out of country trip but so far none have done so.
  • Happy bucks came from: Peter Peters--Eastview has responded in generous fashion to the Hippo Roller 1000 Survival Gardens project in Africa and will have up to $1800 to forward to the R.C. of Winnipeg for this project.
  • Allen reported that Honourary member of Eastview, Lorne White, will be attending the Change-Over dinner.  Allen is working on other members to attend.  He noted Gord Wijiowski has been a member for 60 years.  Allen was also happy that his son and wife have been married 26 years.
  • Ted Kent is happy to be going to a fly-in fishing camp for a few days with friends.
  • Shannon will be attending her son's wedding in Canmore next Friday which was postponed last year due to COVID.
  • Jeff is happy to be going back into the office on Monday after months of working at home.
  • Have a good week everyone.
