SOULS HARBOUR RESCUE MISSION!

    President Jean-Marc invited Gail Bradley to introduce our Guest Speaker Kari Weiss, the Director of Finance and Development, at Souls Harbour Rescue Mission (SHRM). Prior to joining the organization, Kari worked in the grain and construction industries. She felt an increasing desire to work for an organization that was changing people’s lives for the better. In February 2014, SHRM gave her that opportunity. It is here that Kari is privileged to fulfill this desire and to work alongside other people who are equally passionate about making a difference in the lives of vulnerable people in the community.
    Celebrating its 30th Anniversary, the organization, undergirded by the concept that, "Hope begins with a meal", SHRM has been able to maintain 6 of their 7 programs during the COVID pandemic. They chose to discontinue their "free clothing" program until the pandemic subsides. Their children and youth programs, as other programs required some modifications, but adapted fairly well. Using power point slides, Kari introduced members to some of their programs. The preparation of meals remains the same except that the meals must be packaged and picked up and eaten elsewhere. Packaging increases the cost (e.g. bottled water, food packaging), but they experienced positive donation response to cover some of these costs. Kari highlighted their Shayil Home program, a yearlong residential addiction treatment program for women and their children. She identified 3 of the ladies who graduated from the program, some have taken leadership roles in working with women who come to the program with a desire to address their addiction problem. Others have become part of a newer SHRM initiative and are working with Souls Sisters Catering which at this point is waiting for the pandemic to ease.
    We learned that at one point SHRM owned 7 properties, which over the last few years has been reduced to 4, with the expectation that there will be further reduction. SHRM recently merged with Riverside Mission Moose Jaw and are looking to enhancing the services provided in the Moose Jaw community, including a new facility will be similar to, albeit smaller than Regina's Gerri Carroll Hope Centre.
    President Jean-Marc thanked Kari for her most enlightening presentation on a "hope building" initiatives spearheaded by Souls Harbour Rescue Mission.
    Please visit the Soul’s Harbour Website at for an appreciation of their program:

    Rotary International General Secretary John Hewko shared his suggestions on how clubs can survive in the future, in a ZOOM Webinar on Jan. 6th. If you missed his powerful presentation please click on the link below and listen as he invites us to think of the, “value of Rotary as a product that continuously needs to be changed and adjusted to changing member needs”. John Hewko identifies 6 Calls to Action for navigating through current pandemic in an intimate discussion on the future of Rotary in the next few years.
    John Hewko’s comments re-enforce the importance of Regina Eastview’s Strategic Planning process.

The Family of Rotary
  • We were reminded late December Birthdays were celebrated by Kevin Hayes (25th), Paul Daba (25th) and Nelson Falkowsky (27th) - they were not at the meeting so we are hopeful these were great celebrative events;
  • Former member, Dr. Ken Poon spoke with Allen Hillsden, Ann Grahame and Gail Bradley over the Holidays and extended his best wishes to members of Regina Eastview;
  • Ann Grahame told us Berenice Beau, our Club's In-Bound Rotary Exchange Student in 2007-2008, had an exceedingly severe case of COVID 19 with cardiac complications - please remember Berenice as she recovers from her COVID encounter.

This e-mail from the RC of Retalhuleu our partner in the above project:
Dear friends,
    I want to thank you for your support in our projects, and thank you for believing in us and in our dreams of making a better world. But more importantly, thank you for sharing your friendship with us.
    I wish you all the best, have a wonderful holiday season with your family.  I hope to continue working and sharing with you.
    Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

FELLOWSHIP HIGHLIGHTS
  • It was a test by the Sergeant, but the result suggests no Eastviewians present took an international vacation over the holidays;
  • Holiday learnings - i) outside bonfire wiener roasts is a Boxing Day meal option; ii) having a family member assume meal preparation is a splendid approach; iii) adult children have discovered taking charge of preparing Christmas dinner is a very tiring experience; iv) never prepare a whole Regina Eastview Christmas ham for 2 people - there are just so many things you can create with this aging refrigerated hog part; v) Christmas Dinner does not have to be ham or turkey - barbequed ribs work just fine;
  • Peter Neufeldt took Janet, who is recovering from hip surgery, on a tour of the spectacular Regina Christmas light displays (no, it was not a walking tour);
  • Congratulations Jean-Marc Nadeau on becoming a member of the Paul Harris Society;
  • Hope to see you all next week.

“Do the right thing. The ethical path can be lonely, hard, costly, but you’ll never lose self-respect and that’s priceless and fragile.”
