Rotary club members worldwide are cautiously celebrating a major milestone in the global effort to eradicate polio. India, until recently an epicenter of the wild poliovirus, has gone one year without recording a new case of the crippling, sometimes fatal, disease.

India’s last reported case was a two-year-old girl in West Bengal State on 13 January 2011. The country recorded 42 cases in 2010, and 741 in 2009.

A chief factor in India’s success has been the widespread use of the bivalent oral polio vaccine, which is effective against both remaining types of the poliovirus. Another has been rigorous monitoring, which has helped reduce the number of children missed by health workers during National Immunization Days to less than 1 percent, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Building on RI President, Kalayan Banerjee's three areas of emphasis and Rotary International's six areas of focus District Governor, Eva Vida laid out her goals to the forty plus club Presidents at this year's President Elect Training Seminar (PETS) gathering. In a nut shell Vida wants to focus on membership development, create the district's first electronic club, improve our giving to The Rotary Foundation through better use of the Every Year, Every Rotarian campaign, create a new and more visible public relations and communications campaign through the creation of a new committee structure, provide additional support to small clubs of under 15 members and establish a Future Vision transition and training team. In support of RI's areas of focus Vida sees the District building upon our World Peace Partners program, with the first World Peace Partners' scholars program scheduled to begin this summer at the University of Manitoba. As well she will continue to build on our involvement in the Ripple Effect and ShelterBox initiatives. DG Vida's biggest challenge lay in the area of membership. She said, "I want to increase our new membership by a net 48, that is, one new net member per club." In addition, Vida wants to build new clubs one through Facebook and another called an e-club.
